Day 2 - The Building Limes Forum Annual Gathering

Day 2 kicked off with Dave Wiggins presenting his updated thoughts on grouting wet walls and suggesting an update to the Damp Towers Project.

Rachid followed with a very interesting case study on hot mix cocciopesto on the internal and external elevations of a straw bale house in Arles, France.

Richard Ball presented his students research on pozzolans at the University of Bath

Tom Pollard took us through his Culm journey from home making and burning, to the double burn and then briefed on the projects he is and will be working on in 2024/25.

Then over to my colleague Liz Laycock to present on the black ash mortars (or not…) that we have been working with at our Bower Springs project in Sheffield

.dae presented on Araaish, the c.16 like finish from Mughal, India. It was great to be talked through the c.16 painting - Akbarnama - Akbar supervises the building of Fatehpur Sikri, and led to an auction purchase…

The practical session on closed loop construction was a great opportunity to get our hands dirty…

Day 1 - The Building Limes Forum Annual Gathering 2024

As ever, a very enjoyable first day:

Maria-Elena Calderon presented her research into surface coatings in North Yorkshire

Ashley Courtney’s presentation on church disease discussed the problems with inappropriate repairs and the rendered alternatives.

Laura Morgante presented on her work on the floor structure at The Royal Chelsea Hospital.

Ben Bosence took us through the prototyping of his lime and waste blocks in Gent.

Damien Condons layer slaking was great to see on the screen and then in person in the afternoon.

Once the morning sessions were completed, time to play on the tactical sessions in the afternoon.

Always good to get the up to date thinking from Nigel Copsey and Rachid Mizrahi’s Tadelakt demonstration and discussions on Marrakesh lime was very enjoyable.

Kedleston Hall, Derby

Built by Nathaniel Curzon, 1st Baron of Scarsdale to designs by Robert Adam between 1759 - 1765, intended as a ‘temple of the arts’.

Built as a showpiece as opposed to a family home, the family still live in the east wing, with the centre being for entertainment/show and the west once home to the servants and kitchens.

Photo 1 - front elevation showing east, centre and west wings.

Photo 2 - Marble Hall - designed to promote a sense of grandeur, of the open courtyard of a Roman villa. Although called the Marble Hall, the columns are made from alabaster and the floor Hopton Wood Stone.

Photo 3 - Saloon - the dome, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome rises to 62 feet.

Photos 4 and 5 - got to love a cantilever stone staircase and lantern roof.

The raking out by hand at this Grade II listed former stable block is progressing nicely and revealing some of the original stone pins.

Some test mixes have been made and we are close to the original mix with a Calbux 90 quicklime powder and Nosterfield aggregate. Looking forward to seeing the final mix and getting some pointing done when the weather stabilises.
