Hard enough to walk on in a day. Not ready to tile for weeks.

Here's what catches people out with screed: it feels solid within a day or two, but that tells you nothing about whether it's dry enough to tile or lay a floor over. A standard sand and cement screed dries at roughly 1mm a day for the first 50mm, then slower, so a typical floor takes weeks and a thick one can take a couple of months. Lay tiles or boards too soon and the trapped moisture has nowhere to go: tiles lift, grout salts up, timber cups. It's one of the most common reasons floors fail.

Liquid screed gets sold as the quick option, but it dries at a similar rate, so it pays to check rather than assume. We don't judge it by eye or rush the programme. We lay the screed correctly and tell you straight how long it needs before the floor goes on, so your tiler turns up to a floor that's ready.

What we lay:
✅ Standard sand and cement screed, ready mix or site mix
✅ Flowing screed, as approved flowscreed subcontractors
✅ Ardurapid and other quick drying or high strength finishes for tight programmes
✅ Domestic and commercial floors

Over 20 years in the trade, covering Brighton, the South East and London.

Got a floor going in this summer? Don't let the tiling get rushed before the screed is ready. We've put the full timings, screed by screed, in our latest guide. Read it via the link below, or call us on 01273 686 368.

Eight flats, two retail units, and one colour that had to match across the lot.

A main contractor we work with brought us in to render a prominent new development in central Brighton, 8 flats and 2 retail units, with tight access that meant tackling the building in three separate phases.

Here's the catch with phased rendering. Silicone render shifts slightly with temperature and humidity, so rendering one section in spring and another later in the year can leave you with a building that doesn't quite match. The fix isn't luck, it's planning. We built a detailed programme with the main contractor and stuck to it, so the colour came out uniform across all three phases.

We used Krend silicone throughout, a scratch render for durability and a thin coat for a clean, seamless finish. The soffits were the real test, fiddly to reach and unforgiving to get right, but our applicators brought them up to the same standard as everything else.

Finished on time, to a standard the contractor was happy to put their name to.

Summer is render season, and getting it right is as much about how it's applied as what goes on the wall.

Through coloured render is colour all the way through, so once it's on you never repaint the exterior, and there's no painted layer to flake or peel. As a one coat colour finish, monocouche resists cracking, weather and sea air.

The part people forget: silicone render is sensitive to heat and humidity, so temperature swings across a job can affect the finish and leave a building that doesn't quite match. The summer of 2022, one of the hottest on record, even stopped work on our Eastbourne seafront job at times. So we don't rush it: we agree a detailed programme with the main contractor, apply with precision, and hold off in extreme heat rather than hand over a finish that won't last.

What we offer:
✅ Silicone thin coat and scratch (monocouche) render
✅ Approved applicators for K-Rend, Weber, Parex, Licata and Greutol
✅ All aspects of external wall insulation (EWI)
✅ Sprayed or hand applied to suit the project
✅ Colour matched across phases on larger and commercial jobs

INCA members, covering Brighton, the South East and London. Thinking about rendering this summer? Don't leave it to the last warm week. Call us on 01273 686 368 or take a look at the link below and we'll arrange a site visit.

Recreating a 200-year-old Regency wall, one hand-cast bottle at a time.

This project is a section-by-section restoration of an ornate boundary wall on one of Hove's beautiful Regency Squares. Years of coastal weather, bad driving, and patchy repairs had left the balustrade beyond saving, so a complete overhaul was the only way to bring it back to its original glory.

The approach is properly old-school. We recreate the ornate bottles in our off-site workshop, using a fibreglass mould made from an original bottle, pouring them in concrete and letting them set. Then we cast a bespoke concrete lintel, also made by us off site. Once the original wall is removed and the lintel is fitted, we make up zinc horses, core out the capping, fit the bottles, and run the mouldings with the horses in situ before finishing them smooth. Every material on this job is the real thing, right down to the Roman cement.

It's the kind of work that doesn't happen with shortcuts. Bespoke mouldings, original materials, and a level of detail that has to match what's been standing in Hove for two centuries.

Got a period property, a Regency wall, or a heritage restoration that needs proper hands on it? Take a look at the full case study, then give us a call on 01273 686 368 and we'll come and see what we're working with.

The biggest plastering mistake we see? Skipping the prep.

Plaster straight over gloss paint, silk paint, flaky walls or damp and it'll crack, bubble or blow within weeks. Surface prep is half the job, and the walls that still look perfect five years on are the ones that were prepped properly before the trowel ever came out.

Plastering covers a lot more than skimming a wall. On our plastering page we walk through the full range of internal work we take on across the South East, from traditional plaster, lime plasters and hair renders for period and refurbishment work, through to metal framework ceilings with the right board specification for sound and fire protection, lay-in grid ceiling systems for offices, hospitals and schools, over skimming, float and set, and forming arches, curves and niches. No job too small, from a single ceiling to a full commercial fit-out.

We've been plastering across Brighton, Sussex, the South East and London for over 20 years, we're approved subcontractors for all types of internal plastering, and we recently won British Gypsum's "Smoothy of the Year" award.

Good plastering is the foundation of every great room.

Smooth walls, crisp ceilings, clean lines, and a finish that sets up every paint job, light fitting and piece of furniture that comes after it.

Whether you're refurbishing a period property, fitting out a new build, or finishing a commercial project, the plastering has to be right. On our plastering page we cover the full range of internal work we take on across the South East, from traditional plaster and lime plasters through to ceilings, dry-lining and specialist refurbishment work.

Here's what we do:

- Internal plastering across domestic and commercial projects
- Traditional plaster, lime plasters and hair renders for period and refurbishment work
- Metal framework ceilings with the right board specification for sound and fire protection
- Lay-in grid ceiling systems for offices, hospitals and schools

Render that looks fine on day one can crack, trap damp, or ruin the brickwork underneath if it's the wrong type for the building.

If you're asking which type of house render is best for your home, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get because the answer changes depending on the age of the property, the climate, the budget, and how much maintenance you want to take on. In our latest blog, Which Type of House Render Is Best for Your Home, we break down the five render types we work with and where each one actually belongs.

Inside the blog we cover:

- Silicone render and why it's the strongest all-rounder for modern UK homes
- Lime render and why it's the only sensible option for listed buildings, conservation areas, and pre-1919 cottages
- Monocouche, the through-coloured one-coat finish popular on new builds
- Acrylic render, where it works well, and where it doesn't
- Traditional sand and cement, the cheapest option and where it still earns its place
- What coastal properties in Brighton, Eastbourne and along the Sussex coast actually need

If you've got a render job, a refurb, or an external wall insulation project coming up, this will help you choose the right system before any trowel touches the wall.

Want a straight answer for your property? Read the blog, then get in touch and we'll arrange a site visit.

Over 20 years in the trade. 40 tradesmen. Nearly 100 years of combined experience in our Brighton office alone. Here's why that matters to you.

We're a family run plastering and rendering company covering the South East of England and London, and we do it all. Traditional plastering, rendering, EWI, dry lining, screeding, specialist mouldings, and we have our own workshop where we create and repair mouldings that most plasterers simply won't take on.

We're on the Krend and Weber approved applicators list for EWI systems. In 2017, we won the British Gypsum Smoothy of the Year Award for work that featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs. And we've got the kind of client feedback that speaks for itself.

We're not the cheapest and we don't pretend to be, but if you want it done properly, on time, and to a standard you'll actually be proud of, we'd love to talk.

Give us a call on 01273 686368, email [email protected] or head to the link below to find out more. Your project deserves the right team behind it.
