Fitted this window at a Bristol home this morning. The numeral was custom made for this commission. Black and then white opaque glass fused onto dark amber transparent glass. It's a very special feature to add to a design!

Stained edging glass encapsulated into a double glazed unit is a neat option when your house has UPVC frames. Pretty colours in this design!

Weekend Kiln Experiments

I recently bought a small second-hand kiln and invited my friend Rupert from The Stained Glass Factory in Bristol to come down and show us the basics of getting started.
I mostly want to use the kiln for making small pieces to add into my mosaics but it's still fun to play with ideas.

Last weekend we all got together, and after Rupert’s excellent demonstration and talk, each of us made a small experimental piece. Since most of the glass I’ve collected over the years was for mosaics rather than fusing, I hadn’t kept any record of the coefficients—especially for the millefiori and glass rods—so it was very experimental!

Some pieces turned out beautifully, others developed small cracks, and one cracked quite badly. But the session was incredibly useful—it helped me identify the compatibility of the millefiori and canes I’ve been collecting. For my next tests I used COE96 with much more success. I’m particularly excited to try out a batch of intriguing pink glass I’ve had tucked away for years.

At almost two metres long, this rebuilt window has been a sizable, complex design to work with. It's good to refit it back into a Bristol house.
