🏆 We’re thrilled to share that the Keynsham Recycling Hub has now gone on to WIN at the national LABC Building Excellence Awards 2025!

Taking home the National Award for Best Non-Residential
New Build, this achievement is a huge testament to the quality,
collaboration and ambition behind the project. From a highly constrained site to complex operational and engineering challenges — including delivering the council’s largest solar PV array — the scheme showcases what’s possible when the whole team pulls together.

Technical architectural design led by Designscape Architects, and delivered in close collaboration with Sweco UK, Farrans, and Bath & North East Somerset Council, the Keynsham Recycling Hub continues to serve the community every day after more than 18 months of successful operation.

👏 A massive congratulations and thank you to everyone involved — a nationally recognised example of sustainable, collaborative design done right.

Green Park Studios
It has stopped raining – on the inside at least - at our new Studios!

As we draw towards the end of the year, we are just about getting the roof on and we are getting ready to remove the scaffolding – much to the relief of our neighbours!

Of course it is a massive shame this didn’t all happen during the longest, driest summer we had in living memory – all thanks to a completely ridiculous delay in the Planning system, which cost us an 8 months of delay. Fortunately, thanks to the very positive and helpful input from Bath’s “Architect in Residence” - Bob Allies - the local Planning Authority eventually conceded and we were able to start work in August.

So now the roof is (almost) on, and with the help of a 30% Green Business Grant from the we are now a small as well as an architectural practice! We have 44 Solar PV panels on the roof - installed by which should produce around 18,600 kWh of power every year, and save 5.1 tCO2e ( tonnes of carbon).

Which is more energy than we are expecting to use!

The fit out stage of the project will commence in January and will include 2 No ASHPs for the buildings which are anticipated to save an additional 6.1 tCO2e ..…

A great team effort so far – many thanks to:
@ stonecraftofbathltd

Designscape will occupy one of the buildings, and the other will be available to some lucky company looking for about 150 sqm office / studio space to lease next year. DM if you are interested! Go to link in Bio for more info.

🏆 We’re delighted to share that the Keynsham Recycling Hub has been named Regional Winner at the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2025 for Best Non-Residential New Build! This award recognises outstanding construction and workmanship, and we’re thrilled that the project is now heading to the national finals in the New Year.

Designscape Architects led the technical architectural design and delivery, working closely with Sweco UK (engineering), Farrans(main contractor), and Bath & North East Somerset Council (client).

The Keynsham Recycling Hub brings together more than four buildings on a highly constrained site — providing recycling and vehicle
maintenance facilities for the council’s waste and recycling team, alongside a public recycling and re-use shop. The project tackled several engineering and operational

challenges, including delivering the largest solar PV array operated by the
council. After over 18 months of successful operation, it’s rewarding to
see a complex, collaborative project now serving the community every day.

👏 Huge thanks to everyone involved — a fantastic example of teamwork and sustainable design in action.

Last Friday Designscape attended the second annual conference for Sustain Wiltshire, which featured an update and discussion all around our project for CSLL Ltd - a landfill operator turned modern sustainability entrepreneurs....Designscape are very pleased and excited to be supporting their innovative and ambitious endeavours.

The conference included a number of interesting speakers including Roz Savage, the local Lib Dem MP, and Sir Jonathon Porrit - revelling in his new status as a "Suspected Terrorist" following his arrest at the recent support for Palestine protests.

Nick Ash of Sustain Wiltshire CIC dressed in his hi vis and hard hat - someone who "does things" rather than just talking about it - the "proper outfit for a sustainability campaigner" - provided a thought provoking update on their project to turn landfill material into a source of methane (initially) and then a polymer mine once the methane is exhausted. Have a look at the Sustain Britain website for more details and their "Greenprint for a sustainable and Independent Britain".

Sustain Wiltshire has already started to produce significant amounts of energy, and their future plans include earth sheltered business units, air supported greenhouses ( to take advantage of cheap heat, CO2 and energy and to produce year round fresh local produce) as well as planning sustainable, high quality and properly affordable housing to help address the local housing needs.

One of our previous clients asked us to to add a carport to replace a rather delapidated one....In this instance Designscape not only designed the carport but we also did all the fabrication drawings for CNC cutting and we acted as Construction Manager, procuring and coordinating all the labour and materials. This ended up costing approximately 50% of the prices that were returned through a traditional tender process...and we had a lot of fun doing it too.
Spot the bespoke built - in swift boxes in the end gable....
Many thanks to our Clients for entrusting us with this project, and also to (structural engineer) , ( Groundworks and superstructure er****on,) (douglas fir) (CLT panels) (CNC cut materials, and (LVL panels)
And of course Dave for the bespoke metal fabrication. Job well done all.

Just a bit of landscaping to finish now....

We are very happy to welcome Tom Harvey back to the Designscape Team.
Tom worked with us for his "Part 1 Placement" year before returning to Bath University for his Masters.
He has now successfully completed his Masters with an well deserved 2:1 Masters degree - whilst simuntaneously indulging his other pastime of cycling by designing a Velodrome in Madrid.
Tom became something of an whizz in his first year here, and is now pushing on with some projects which should provide him with ideal hands on experience for his RIBA Part III in the not too distant future...

Green Park Studios After years of searching for the ideal site, we have finally
found the perfect new home for Designscape! At the end of last year, with the help of ,
having secured a Change of Use permission, we acquired - with the invaluable
help of the wonderful Jonny Bruton - the old Midland Car Garage at Green Park
Mews, next to Midland Bridge in Bath. The site actually consists of two buildings, formerly a workshop and car
showroom, but clearly no longer suited to that use. The site is very close to the City Centre and
next to the riverbank - a very pleasant
10 minute walk to Bath Spa station along the river towpath. It has taken 8 months to get planning approval for the
conversion of the building - it has been
a saga, but more on that later! The proposal
is to make some fairly minimal changes to the exterior of the existing
buildings, to retain their original “industrial” character, and the character
of the conservation area – resisting the pressure to gentrify this Mews and turn
it into something that it has never been. It was always, and will remain very much a working building. The buildings are now stripped out and work begins in
earnest next week!Designscape will occupy one of the buildings, and the other
will be available to some lucky company looking for about 150 sqm office /
studio space to lease next year. DM if you are interested!@contextplanning_uk@wansbroughs Hashtags:

These last few weeks we have been busy; however, we always
find time to put together tender submissions when the project is interesting!

This tender submission required the development of a new community centre adjacent to a series of large community sport playing fields. The proposal brief set was loose and open to creative development, requiring a community centre for the public that could offer flexible spaces for community use.

The following images demonstrate a compressed version of our submission with diagrams to provide the reader an idea of the thinking and logic involved in developing such a design. These images should be read in conjunction with the previous post.
