Heating that fits the person — not the other way around.
The most important part of this heating upgrade happened after the tools were packed away.
We recently replaced the old night-storage heaters in a flat within a local communal development with modern Ecostrad iQ Ceramic electric radiators. But fitting the radiators was only part of the job.
We connected every heater to Wi-Fi and asked the customer how she actually lives: what temperature she prefers overnight, when she gets up, when she needs the flat warmer and how she uses each room. We then programmed the system around her routine rather than leaving her with a generic factory schedule.
We also arranged remote access for her daughter-in-law, so a trusted family member can check or adjust the heating whenever help is needed. Then we sat down with the customer and demonstrated the controls and app carefully until she felt comfortable using them herself.
That handover matters enormously. Smart heating is only useful when the person living with it understands it and feels confident. We do not simply fit the equipment, leave behind a booklet and disappear. She was absolutely over the moon with the finished system.
There is another potential benefit which is rarely discussed: temperature stability and condensation.
Old storage heaters do not produce moisture, so it would be inaccurate to claim that they directly cause condensation or mould. However, their operating pattern can contribute to the conditions in which condensation develops. A traditional storage heater charges overnight, becomes very hot and then gradually loses its stored heat. In some homes this creates a considerable temperature swing between the morning and later in the day.
As rooms and external walls cool, moisture in the air can condense on those colder surfaces. If that happens repeatedly, the damp surfaces can provide conditions in which mould grows. A correctly sized and properly scheduled system can help maintain a steadier indoor temperature and warmer surfaces, reducing this particular contributor to condensation risk.
Heating alone is not a cure for damp or mould. Ventilation, extraction, insulation, household moisture and possible building defects must also be considered. Nevertheless, avoiding repeated cycles of excessive heat followed by the home becoming cold can be an important part of keeping a property comfortable and managing condensation.
A sensible word about efficiency as well: modern electric radiators are not magic, and we will not make exaggerated promises. The practical improvement is control. Heat can be scheduled room by room for when it is actually wanted. Running costs will always depend on the property, electricity tariff, settings and individual use.
This is now the third flat in the same development where residents have trusted us with this type of upgrade, with another already booked. The decorators will finish the areas exposed because the original storage heaters were considerably larger; electrically, the new system is installed, connected, programmed and working exactly as the customer wanted.
