APL Awards 2025 - GOLD Design & Build
THE BRIEF
The brief was to take the one-acre green field site and create a garden design that compliments the clean lines and rectilinear design features of the contemporary new build house.
A large drive would be needed, as well as generous terraces and paths, and naturalistic planting that would work alongside the modern house.
THE CLIENT
The clients had the existing 1970's bungalow demolished, and an impressive new build house designed and constructed by Moon Design and Moon Build.
The garden was a predominantly blank one-acre site, with one large mature cedar tree that was to stay. The house is roughly in the centre of the plot, and the client wanted the house to look like it sits effortlessly within the garden.
THE APPROACH
The new structural ‘bones’ of the garden were built in traditional materials, sympathetic to the house and surrounding area; cool-grey limestone, buff Cotswold chippings, timber.
Sections of clay pavers in warm, earthy tones, were incorporated for colour and textural variation, and we softened the overall look with deep herbaceous borders, with whimsical, naturalistic planting.
COMPLETION
The finished garden has a luxurious and contemporary feel, while still fitting seamlessly into the Cotswolds countryside.
The natural swimming pool with surrounding porcelain terrace creates a beautiful oasis, with the cedar pool house echoing the main house in style.
Terraces of clay pavers and Jura grey limestone pathways lead around the acre site, with ornamental grasses and tall perennials creating softness and seclusion.
Along with 35 trees, over 250m of Yew hedging was planted, Cotswold stone walling built, and cantilevered sliding gates at the entrance to the long clay paver driveway.
