You may recall Abbey House Manor and Gardens featured several years ago in the ITV series “The Naked Gardener”. The manor house dates back to the 16th century, however historic documents show that buildings have been situated on the site since the 11th century. In the mid 1990s the five-acre site was developed by its former owner, architect Ian Pollard, who created a series of formal garden spaces and a natural riverside arboretum.

Now with North American owners Kim and Whit Hanks, they plan to transform this property into a luxury boutique hotel. Detailed elevation drawings, floorplans and a topographic survey of the gardens and riverside arboretum were all deemed essential for the project, and we were delighted to receive an instruction to undertake the surveys of the property.

On arrival at site our survey team first scanned the exterior of the house followed by the interior. As this was a heritage property, our 3D terrestrial laser scanners were set to scan for a much longer duration to ensure every historical feature was captured in full detail during the survey.

Our survey team completed all the measured surveys, including the topographic survey, in two days. Whilst not a requirement for the project, we were keen to carry out an aerial drone survey of the site and create an orthomosaic however the great British weather (high winds and rain) prevailed on the final day of surveying preventing any plans to fly.

Worcester Lodge, situated on the picturesque Badminton Estate in the South Cotswolds village of Didmarton, is a refined wedding venue steeped in history. Designed in 1746 by the celebrated architect William Kent, this charming West Country location offers an idyllic setting for couples seeking a memorable outdoor celebration.

Pinpoint Mapping was instructed to provide floorplans and elevations of the building in order to help support the planning of weddings at the venue.

We carried out a measured building survey producing accurate scaled drawings that highlight the Lodge’s interior and exterior including its impressive architectural elements. Deploying up to date survey technology, our specialists here at Pinpoint Mapping scanned, surveyed and recorded the building as a three dimensional point cloud. On returning to our office we employed a mixture of traditional survey techniques and the latest in CAD software to create detailed elevations, floorplans and sections.

Drones are transforming the construction industry in the UK with several practical applications.

Key uses include:

Site Surveys and Mapping: Drones equipped with LiDAR or high-resolution cameras can quickly capture detailed topographical data, providing accurate 3D maps and models of a site. This streamlines the survey process, reducing time and cost compared to traditional methods.

Progress Monitoring and Reporting: Drones can conduct regular flyovers to document construction progress, capturing images and videos that provide stakeholders with a real-time view of the site. This improves communication, especially in large or remote projects, by allowing teams to track work and identify delays.

Inspections and Quality Control: Drones can safely inspect structures at height or in hard-to-reach places, such as roofs or scaffolding. They help identify defects, structural issues, or potential safety hazards without the need for ladders or scaffolding, reducing risk for workers.

Health and Safety: By monitoring sites from the air, drones can spot potential safety risks, like unsecured materials or unsafe worker behaviour. In case of emergencies, such as a fire or structural failure, drones can assess damage without putting workers in harm's way.

Thermal Imaging for Energy Efficiency: With thermal cameras, drones can identify areas of heat loss in buildings, which is crucial for energy efficiency. This is especially useful in refurbishing projects aimed at making older buildings more sustainable.

Inventory and Material Management: Drones can quickly scan stockpiles and construction materials on-site, allowing for efficient inventory management. This reduces the time needed for manual checks and helps in avoiding material shortages or excesses.

These applications improve project efficiency, safety, and sustainability, making drones an invaluable asset in modern UK construction.

Drones have several key capabilities for surveying, including:

- High-Resolution Imaging: Drones can capture high-resolution aerial photographs and videos, providing detailed visuals for building surveys and inspections.

- LiDAR Technology: Equipped with LiDAR sensors, drones can create precise 3D models of the terrain, capturing elevation data and surface features.

- Mapping and GIS Integration: Drones can produce orthomosaic maps and integrate data with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for detailed analysis and planning.

- Rapid Data Collection: Drones can survey large areas quickly, significantly reducing the time required compared to traditional surveying methods.

- Access to Hard-to-Reach Areas: They can easily navigate challenging terrains, such as dense forests or steep slopes, that might be difficult for ground crews to access.

- Thermal Imaging: Drones can be used for thermal surveys, identifying heat loss in buildings.

- Cost-Effectiveness: Drones reduce labor costs and equipment expenses associated with traditional surveying methods.

These capabilities make drones a powerful tool for various surveying applications, including construction, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure inspections.

If you’d like to discuss your drone survey requirements with Pinpoint Mapping, we’re always happy to help!
