🧱 HARDWICKE ROAD – COMPLETE!

Where contemporary meets traditional.

Another project wrapped up in Reigate, combining modern design with the character and charm of this beautiful Victorian home.

Our works included a two-storey timber frame extension and a single-storey rear extension, creating a fantastic amount of open-plan living space while maintaining the property’s original character.

The contrast between old and new is what really makes this project stand out. Traditional Victorian architecture meets contemporary design, with large expanses of glazing bringing in natural light and opening up the rear of the property.

And let’s talk about those bricks! 🧱

A beautiful choice of multi-toned facing bricks, full of colour, texture and character. The blend of warm reds, buffs and weathered tones works brilliantly alongside the existing Victorian brickwork, tying the whole project together.

Clean lines, carefully detailed brickwork and a great balance between traditional materials and modern architecture.

Another job we’re proud to have been involved in, and another example of how the right materials and attention to detail can make all the difference.

🧱 MEET THE TEAM – RICH AKA BEZ 🧱

AKA The Artisan, Dr Berry, The Forger… and The Cavity Police! 🚨😂

We’ve saved the best till last (according to Bez anyway).

With over 35 years in brickwork, Bez is a proper old-school craftsman. Stonework, arches, decorative brickwork and the undisputed Soldier Course King 👑

There’s not much he can’t build, cut or repair. Damaged brick or stone? Dr Berry will sort it!

His patience, cool head and incredible skill set make him our go-to man for intricate work and a brilliant mentor to the younger lads.

But don’t mistake patience for letting standards slip! Full joints, trays stuck down and clean cavities are non-negotiable. Hence the nickname The Cavity Police! 😂

Ben first met Bez on site in 2010. After years of persuasion, he finally joined Ewood and has since run everything from bespoke homes to multi-unit developments.

A favourite with clients, contractors and the lads, thanks to his big personality and relentless sarcasm.

And if you haven’t heard how they did things back in the 90s, don’t worry, Bez will tell you! 😂

Away from work, he’s a devoted family man and proud new grandad. Usually found walking the River Mole with his wife and dog, stopping at The Arkle 🍺 or enjoying the coast.

He’s also the life and soul of any party, never short of a story or a laugh.

If Bez hasn’t built it, it probably wasn’t worth building! (His words, probably.)

A proper character, a proper craftsman and a huge part of Ewood.

35+ years on the trowel and still showing the youngsters how it’s done! 💙

🧱 MEET THE TEAM – BEN 🧱

AKA BENJOS | THE GAFFER | THE MAN BEHIND EWOOD

This week we’re introducing the man who started it all. Owner, director, bricklayer, foreman and, depending on who you ask, full-time carer to the rest of the team! 😂

Ben’s brickwork journey began over 22 years ago with an apprenticeship. After gaining his Level 3 qualification, he spent years working for smaller builders, learning his trade before venturing onto larger sites.

Working for various brickwork subcontractors, he progressed into foreman roles, running gangs and managing projects before eventually settling into business with a partner.

A move to Reigate in 2017 brought new opportunities. Building relationships with local developers and builders, Ben laid the foundations for what would become Ewood Developments Ltd.

The rest, as they say, is history!

Now at the ripe old age of 38, still desperately clinging onto his youth, Ben has 22 years of experience and an almost AI-like ability to read drawings. Couple that with an obsession for detail and a relentless work ethic, and you’ve got yourself a fairly efficient bricklaying machine! 🤖🧱

Fuelled by vanilla lattes, ambition and a desire to provide for his family, his motivation remains simple: build a business to be proud of and keep pushing Ewood towards the top of the pile.

🥊 OUTSIDE OF WORK

Ben can usually be found attempting to maintain some resemblance of physical fitness at his local boxing gym or helping coach his son’s U7 football team.

When the phone finally stops ringing, he’s also been known to enjoy the occasional Peroni. 🍺

😂 A FINAL WORD…

The lads originally volunteered to write this introduction.

However, after reviewing their suggestions, the marketing department decided a more humble, professional and factually accurate version would be appropriate.

Apparently, there are limits to what we’re allowed to publish about the boss!

🧱❄️ WINTER IS COMING… AND SO ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF CUTTING CORNERS!

Summer has a funny way of hiding poor workmanship. Winter, on the other hand, has a habit of exposing it! 👀

As temperatures drop and the rain starts doing what British rain does best, those little shortcuts taken during construction can soon become very expensive problems.

💧 Damp patches appearing on internal walls.

🥶 Cold spots where insulation hasn’t been fitted correctly.

🧱 Poorly installed DPC trays and skirts allowing moisture where it shouldn’t be.

🌧️ Blocked cavities, dirty trays and missing weep vents preventing water from draining correctly.

❄️ Gaps in insulation and poorly fitted fire socks leaving areas vulnerable to heat loss and compromising fire protection.

The problem? By the time these issues become noticeable, the brickwork is finished, the scaffold is down and the contractor is long gone!

At Ewood Developments Ltd, we believe the workmanship you can’t see is every bit as important as the brickwork you can.

✔️ Correct cavity widths.

✔️ Snug, properly fitted fire socks.

✔️ DPC trays and skirts installed correctly.

✔️ Clean cavities and unobstructed weep vents.

✔️ Continuous insulation without gaps or cold bridges.

✔️ Telescopic vents installed properly.

Building Control shouldn’t have to tell you to do your job properly.

But we know… not everyone sees it that way! 👀

A tidy joint and a straight wall might look great in a photograph, but what’s going on behind that brickwork is what really matters.

Good workmanship isn’t just about getting a building signed off. It’s about making sure it performs for years to come.

Because when winter arrives, there’s nowhere for poor workmanship to hide.

🧱 MEET THE TEAM – CHARLIE AKA HOOKS! 🔵⚪️

THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE HODDING MACHINE! 🧱😂

Next up in our Meet the Team series is Charlie, AKA Hooks – one of our newer recruits, but already a massive cog in the Ewood machine!

A devoted dad, a die-hard Chelsea fan and quite possibly the only man on site who gets more excited about a clean bucket than an early finish! ⚽️😂

Charlie might be relatively new to the team, but his reliability, forward thinking and organisation have already made him an invaluable member of the Ewood family.

A good hod carrier is worth his weight in gold, and Charlie proves exactly why. Always thinking two steps ahead, keeping materials flowing and making sure everything is where it needs to be before it’s needed. His approach allows our bricklayers to concentrate on what they do best – getting bricks in the wall!

THERE IS, HOWEVER, ONE GOLDEN RULE…

GOD FORBID YOU LEAVE A DIRTY TOOL OR A MESSY WORK AREA! 🚨😂

Leave a dirty trowel lying around or fail to wash out a bucket and you’ll soon find yourself on the receiving end of a Charlie inspection. We’re fairly certain he’d rather see Chelsea relegated than find dried mortar in one of his buckets! 💀

All jokes aside, it’s lads like Charlie who keep our sites running efficiently. His attention to detail, work ethic and pride in keeping everything organised make a huge difference to the entire team.

He might not be the one laying the bricks, but he’s a big part of the reason the rest of us can!

WHEN THE DRAWING LOOKS GREAT… UNTIL THE BRICKLAYER TURNS UP 🧱😂

Sometimes steel manufacturers and structural engineers don’t always consider the poor bricklayer who’s got to make it all work — and make it look good at the same time.

On this one, the steelwork would have been left visible, which wasn’t the finish we wanted.

So the solution? Only 45 individual bricks to cut and shape to neatly conceal the steelwork and keep the brickwork looking exactly as it should. 😅

A little more time, a lot more cutting, but these are the details that make the difference.

Because once the job is finished, nobody sees the problem — they just see the finish. 👌🧱

💙 MEET THE TEAM — HEIDI AKA LA MADRINA

Heidi joined Ewood back in 2021. After a massive few years of growth, we quickly realised we needed someone to keep the numbers — and probably the rest of us — firmly under control. 😂

With her extensive accounts knowledge and experience as a former business owner herself, Heidi was the perfect fit and has since become an invaluable part of Ewood.

A mainstay and a pretty big cog in the Ewood machine, she’s the one behind the scenes making sure the numbers work, keeping the paperwork in order and dealing with a huge amount of the emails, enquiries and day-to-day admin that keeps everything moving.

She also does her best to keep spending on staff parties and new tools to an absolute minimum… apparently things like “profit margins” and “cash flow” are more important. Who knew? 🙄😂

Away from Ewood, Heidi is a keen horse rider and animal lover — although considering she’s only in the bloody country for about half the year, we’re seriously considering upgrading her laptop to something more suitable for international use. ✈️💻😂

A massive part of the company that most clients probably never see, but one we certainly couldn’t do without.

Every good site team needs an even better team behind the scenes. 👏

🧱 STONEWORK IS EASY… UNTIL YOU HAVE TO MAKE IT LOOK RIGHT. 👀

A throwback to this 7-home development in Nutfield, completed by us around two years ago.

Here we were fitting reconstituted stone to timber frame builds — combining modern construction with a traditional stone finish.

Getting the stone up is one thing. Getting the mortar, colour and pointing right is where the difference really shows.

For this one we used a carefully selected stone aggregate mixed with white cement, giving us the colour and texture needed to complement the stone and achieve the right finish.

No bright grey joints and definitely no “don’t worry, it’ll dry lighter” excuses. 😂

Two years later and still one we’re proud to put our name to. 👌

MEET THE TEAM | PAUL 🧱

Paul joined Ewood back in 2020, and it didn’t take long for his relentless work ethic and wealth of experience to make an impression.

He soon found himself running numerous sites for us, from multi-unit developments to one-off bespoke houses. Whatever the job, Paul and his team never fail to deliver, maintaining the quality and standards we expect while keeping the job moving.

Away from the trowel, Paul is a fitness fanatic and avid kickboxer. Most mornings you’ll find him somewhere on the South Downs putting in a casual 10K before heading to site for a hard day’s graft — apparently a normal warm-up in Paul’s world. 😂

A trusted and experienced member of the team who has played a big part in Ewood over the years. 💪🧱
