One of my favourites! Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ in bloom in my garden.
A gorgeous flowering shrub whose stems and leaves seem to sit horizontally. Turning a buttery yellow in autumn, it will lose its leaves in winter.
The shrub will flower through to autumn if dead-headed. Height and spread to approx 3 metres if left unpruned. As I am on chalk which can be low in nutrients I mulch with a good quality compost every spring.

Castle Hill, South Island, New Zealand
These huge limestone boulders were once part of the sea bed. A tectonic shifting so frequent still in this area, brought them up to the place they are today while the sea has receded right back to Christchurch.
