A remarkable building, given a new purpose.
This Grade II* curtilage-listed Coach House forms part of the historic Hillhampton House estate in Worcestershire, once the hunting lodge for Witley Court.
Dating back to the 16th century and altered many times since, it arrived with centuries of character – along with some significant practical challenges. Working closely with Zebra Architects Architects and conservation specialists, we transformed the disused stable block into a four-bedroom family home. Traditional lime products allowed the old walls to breathe, original lath and plaster was preserved and the stable’s blue brick floor was carefully lifted and re-laid in the new kitchen.
Behind the beautiful finish sits an enormous amount of less visible work, from improving the thermal performance of the roof to installing bat lofts, a sewage treatment plant and an underground 10,000-litre oil storage tank.
The result is a contemporary home that feels warm, comfortable and entirely suited to modern life, without erasing the history that makes the building so special.
