Quantock Landscape Partnership Scheme Working with the Quantock Hills National Landscape & National Lottery Heritage Fund to Reimagine the manor and Live, Learn and Inspire our local communities.

The QLPS is 69% funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with additional funding from Hinkley Point C s106, the National Trust, Friends of Quantock, and the

AONB itself. It is hosted and led by the Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (QHAONB).

Following last month’s well-received talk on the early results from the North Petherton test pitting, our next lecture turns to flint tools.
The session will be led by our Chairman, Ant, and will explore how flint artefacts are identified, dated, and what they can tell us about past activity.
As always, the lecture £4 early bird ticket, £5 from 23rd Feb and free to members.
Details on the poster.

For Halloween, Blabbermouth Community Storytelling presents an atmospheric retelling of a classic English Folk Tale.

The Dead Moon, sometimes known by its alternative title, The Buried Moon, is a strange story of the moon descending from the sky in the form of a woman, to illuminate the marshes, where local people live in fear of the horrors lurking in the darkness. On 28th October, local storyteller and award winning archaeologist Dan Broadbent will present a unique retelling of this tale, to be followed by a Q&A exploring the origins of a story which some have claimed as evidence of pre-Christian moon worship. However... is it really an ancient tale or, rather, a Victorian invention? Join us in October to find out.

On Friday 29th August, our own Historic Heritage Officer will be teaming up with our friends at Dryad Gin and donning his storytellers hat to explore the archaeology, history and folklore of Dead Woman's Ditch.

Love history, folklore and nature? Partial to a drop of award-winning gin?

On Friday 29th August, award winning archaeologist and storyteller Dan Broadbent will be teaming up with Dryad Gin for a very special at the notorious Dead Woman's Ditch on the Quantock Hills.

Reputedly haunted, and wrongly associated with a brutal 18th century murder, we'll be unpicking fact from fiction as we explore the archaeology, history, myth and legend associated with this enigmatic site. In the process, we'll consider what the site reveals about the pagan history of the hills and the coming of Christianity.

We will also visit Lady's Fountain where team Dryad will perform a Gin Blessing, and discuss the inspiration that the flora and mythology of the Quantocks have played in the creation of their award winning gin - which you will have the chance to enjoy.

Come and join us this Sunday as we recreate a traditional charcoal burn on the Quantock Hills!

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, volunteers from the Quantock Hills National Landscape and the QLPS will be experiencing a glimpse of life as a traditional charcoal burner.

Charcoal production was once a major rural industry across the Quantock Hills, as evidenced by the remains of scores of charcoal-burning platforms which can still be found, particularly in the various eastern combes.

Our volunteers will be working with local charcoal maker, Chris Silverwood, to build a traditional earth clamp kiln which will then be carefully tended, ensuring it burns slowly throughout the weekend. Some of them will even be out under the stars to maintain the burn overnight.

If you are visiting Cothelstone Hill this Sunday 24th August, why not pop by and check on our progress. Between 11am and 3pm we will be welcoming visitors to our temporary charcoal burners camp, where you will be able to see the clamp and chat to Chris and the volunteers about their experience - the camp will be sign-posted from the Cothelstone Hill Car Park.

We will also be running FREE charcoal-based storytelling and activity sessions around the campfire; to join us for these sessions, gather at the Car Park at 11am; 12.30pm or 2pm.

We hope to see you there!
