It is Day 5 of West Lothian Business Week!
Day Five - Favourite place in WL

HAB Architecture have recently moved their offices to Broxburn and every day I now drive into West Lothian via the A89 from the East. Passing under the Broxburn Railway Viaduct (next to the much longer Almond Valley Viaduct) is a reminder of the built environment around me. The series of repetitive arches, is visually appealing to my architectural brain and I love the sense that this bridge forms the gateway to West Lothian from the Edinburgh boundary. When I first worked in WL circa 2009, I used to take the train to Linlithgow, crossing the bridge twice daily, so it is a structure firmly in my memory!

It is Day 4 of West Lothian Business Week!
Day Four - Advice to someone starting up a business in WL

I'm a firm believer in preparation being key to success. Not just in business but in any walk of life. Prepare for your aims. Have confidence in not only yourself but your business and your plan. Believe in what you do. Have an idea for your path but try not to worry if it doesn't always quite go to plan.
Networking is also critical. Tap into other local peoples skills and abilities. Approach other people. Ask for help. Use local knowledge and facilities. The Invest in West Lothian and Business Gateway websites and team of individuals are a wealth of knowledge and easy to approach.
At HAB Architecture we, like many local small businesses are always happy to assist with general queries if it is something we can assist with. People like to help people!

It is Day 3 of West Lothian Business Week!
Day 3 - A project I'm most proud of.

Many of my most informative professional years were taught under the wing of a local businessman, Chartered Surveyor, mentor and friend, Mr Derek Blair. Derek passed away last year but he taught me so much about architecture; business and people. One of our projects was for the reinstatement of the Shotts Scouts Hall which had previously been razed to the ground in an arson attack. Working closely with the local community, we were able to secure funding via the National Lottery 'Big Lottery Fund', and designed and rebuilt a fantastic new hall for the local community to enjoy.
Plus it's not often your building is immortalised in the form of a cake! 🎂

It is West Lothian Business Week!

Day Two - Favourite thing about my role (Architect)

Ordinary people commission us, seeking guidance and assistance to help them bring their vision to life, often with extra ordinary results! I love working with individuals, listening to their brief and developing a design which can often change the way in which they live in their homes and can have hugely positive outcomes. Seeing a project come to fruition from an initial drawing is very rewarding and creating spaces for people to enjoy is a delight.

It is West Lothain Business Week!
*Introduction*
The names Beedie, Fiona Beedie. I am the B of HAB Architecture, a local West Lothian architectural practice, of which I am Director and Chartered Architect, alongside my business partner Marc Hislop - who incidently, is the H of the firm!
I left university 20y ago this summer, a newly qualified Part 2 architectural graduate, unsure what path my architectural career would take. Fast forward 20y, surviving the final Part 3 exams to become an Architect; navigating the 2010 global recession; redundancy and unemployment; working in various architectural roles, starting a family; riding out an international pandemic and finally finding myself here, 50% owner of a successful local architectural practice, now completing our 5th year in business. Q. Why did the brickie fall out with the facing brick?
A. Because every conversation ended with "you're just putting up a facade".... 😒
Fabulous to recieve recent photos of one of our designs reaching completion for our Clients. We are not always commissioned on site so its great to be kept in the loop with our Clients and builders!
Flanked by existing extensions either side, this infill, rear extension uses facing brick and composite cladding to provide an interest to the only facade facing the garden.
Definitely a facade to bring into conversation!
HAB a fab weekend folks!

I told the contractor I wanted a standing seam metal roof.
He said "great choice, it's strong, sleek and low maintenance".
Now my roof has better life qualities than I do! 🫠
We obtained building warrant approval for this standing seam metal clad extension to a rural farm cottage earlier this year. Looking forward to seeing works commence on site later in the year!
Its definitely going to be strong, sleek and low maintenance!
HAB a fab weekend folks!

*Friday Funny*
Marc came into the new office today and Fiona was wearing two jackets. He asked why and was informed, "I was finishing up the paint work and it suggested i apply two coats"..... 😂
Its been one year since Marc and Fiona lost their friend and mentor, Derek Blair and its been one week since we moved into our new HQ. We're so proud of all we have achieved together and know those foundations were helped to be laid by Derek. We wish he could be here to see how far we've come. The blue skies weren't painted on today but were absolutely welcomed as we took a wee walk to explore our new neighbourhood.
HAB a FAB weekend folks - here's to more blue skies like it and to friendships that last a lifetime 💙
