The Timber Frame Company

The Timber Frame Company Design-led timber frame company On occasion, best value even means recommending that a client does not use a structural post and beam frame at all.

The company was founded by current Managing Director, Jim Blackburn who realised that the key to producing great timber framed buildings is good design. Good design is not just about producing something that is aesthetically pleasing - it is also about delivering the best value to the client. This means producing honest designs that have neither too much timber (costing the client too much), nor t

oo little (seeming cheaper now, then becoming expensive once it gets to engineers). Essentially – we love what we do and we want to you love your building too!

There’s something rather exciting about a roofless masonry building under a tin roof. The pile of oak timbers will support its new lid. A relief to get it all to site as all the builders we are working with have been really struggling with big delays due to problems with material availability. We’ve got rather a lot of frames backing up so it will be a very busy spring on site. An exciting year ahead!’

With my old mate Janine Tutt at Ashwell Timber recyclers, Essex. I was like a kid in a sweet shop, 3hrs whizzed by, so many amazing piles of timber each with their own story, waiting to be turned into something new and beautiful. I’m really excited by the prospect of using more amazing materials that have had a previous life. As people’s awareness grows over the increasing effects of climate change on timber buildings and structures, using recycled highly durable tropical hardwoods is a no brainer. Can’t wait to start playing with some samples!!

While our page has been somewhat abandoned, we've been really busy! We are delighted to announce that we've moved our office and built a new studio / office with a small yard all in one place. It's very exciting and we've lots to show the world soon. We'll also catch up on some of the lovely frames we've been building in between choosing paint colour and fitting windows! Sometimes the simplest frames are the most satisfying. Tricky hip and valley positions but neatly cut tidy compound joints. This building is essentially a Somerset stone barn and oak roof over a modest swimming pool. Looking forward to coming back to see it finished....

I paid a visit to Hadspen House dropping off some samples and stopped to take a quick photo of the Belvedere project I worked on with David Grandorge and his London Met students. It’s looking handsome in the strong sunlight and no leaves!

Rob and I made a visit to Mill Barns to fit the last wedges to a couple of tie beam tenons we couldn’t get to in the rush to finish the halls before the first wedding. We had peace and quiet and I sneaked 20 minutes to get these photos! It really is all looking stunning. I’m particularly pleased with how light the checking is, given it’s as warm as toast inside. We rigorously waxed the end grain of all the timbers before and after the carpentry work, I think that’s the reason the shoulders are tight and the checks are so slight (so far...)particularly on the long sling braces. The venue has become madly popular, apparently all weekends and bank holidays are fully booked until September 2020! Really pleased for Ben and his hard working team, they deserve the success.
