Indoor–Outdoor Living | Connecting House and Garden
The relationship between internal space and the garden can fundamentally shape how a home is used.
For this town-centre extension in North Cornwall, the existing kitchen was disconnected from an underused and difficult to access garden, with a significant level change preventing any meaningful relationship between the house and external space.
By extending at ground level and re-organising the layout, a direct physical and visual connection was established between the new kitchen and the terrace beyond.
A glazed Crittall wall defines a permeable threshold, allowing natural light to reach deep into the plan while maintaining a clear relationship between inside and outside space. The garden becomes an extension of the living area, a usable outdoor room.
Hard landscaping and planting define a series of smaller, more private external areas, allowing the garden to be used in different ways throughout the day.
Careful attention to levels and circulation ensures the house and garden function together as a cohesive whole, transforming how the space is used throughout the day. This approach contributed to the project receiving a regional LABC award, and being shortlisted for a Build It Award.
If you’re considering extending or adapting your home, we would be pleased to explore how indoor and outdoor spaces can work together more effectively.
