All good things come to an end and here are the photos from a complete refurbishment of the hexagonal bench on Elm Hill in Norwich.
The refitting took all week including the levelling of the surrounding cobbles and flints and what a nice week we had. The repairs took much longer.
In preparation for the planning I drew the seat in cad for historical purposes and it was accepted by Norwich council which also nice.
The people and visitors of Norwich were enthusiastic and really complimentary towards the repairs.
From early on we learned how much this landmark, meeting place and rest stop means to the nice people of Norwich. From commuters and residents to students and tourists, lots of people stopped and asked about the repairs and the age and history of this iconic landmark on the oldest street in Norwich. It’s been great do, to embrace the sheer wonkyness of it all and make a really good well thought out repair that will hopefully last another 46 or more??
In more detail we removed the bench, sanded it right back to see what kind of repair were needed (2 sanders unfortunately died in this process)
then seeing how many ridges there were on the boards, decided that epoxy resin repairs would be the best course of action to allow the water to bead off. So epoxy repairs is exactly what we did followed by a lot more sanding.
Lots of the end grain had deteriorated too which needed repairing and unfortunately 2 of the seats were beyond repair so we made some replacements with new oak.
I feel that pieces with this much character don’t need to hide their repairs. It’s more honest to their life’s journey to show where rot had taken hold and where the original has continued to survive. The obvious new and old wood share the story,
not just to carpenters but for every person who sits in the bench to unravel as they take their 5 min break.
Btw if you take a rest on the new bench definitely consider a pop in to the Bear Shop or the cafe/restaurant (world class sausage rolls) and gift shops on Elm hill. They have genuinely kind owners.
Thank you.
