A low pitch extension roof in Burgess Hill, finished well and built to last. Here’s what went into it.

This extension came to us with the wrong tiles fitted and windows that weren’t suited to the low pitch. We put both right from the ground up.

We stripped the roof back and started again. New breathable membrane, eave sheet, eave trays and treated battens, all set to the correct gauge for the new low pitch tiles. On went the Mendip 12.5 tiles, the right choice for a shallow pitch like this one. New Velux low pitch top hung windows went in at the correct pitch, and Lordans Leadwork carried out fresh code 4 lead work to finish it off.

The result is an extension roof that now does its job, keeping water out and standing up to whatever the weather throws at it, low pitch and all.

Another full strip and recover completed in Burgess Hill, and this one has transformed the property.

We stripped the existing covering, reused the concrete interlocking tiles to keep costs sensible, and rebuilt the roof from the battens up with a breathable membrane underneath. The verges have been properly bedded, and the ridge finished with a dry ridge system that meets current British Standards and puts an end to the cracked mortar problems so common on older Mid Sussex roofs.

The result is essentially a brand new roof, with better ventilation, improved weather resistance, and decades of life ahead of it.

While we were up there, we repointed the outer brickwork and the coping stones, then sealed everything with Storm Dry to lock out water and damp for good.

Strip and recover roof transformation completed in Lindfield, West Sussex.

Last week our team carried out a full strip and recover on this property, fitting a dry verge system at the customer’s request and finishing the ridgeline with a dry ridge system for a clean, weatherproof seal that needs no mortar maintenance. While the scaffolding was in place we relaunched and storm dried the chimney, and installed brand new hollow soffit boards to the rear soffit detail, covering every area of the roof that needed attention in one efficient visit.

Another two-storey side extension wrapped up for over in Haywards Heath, and we’re really pleased with how this one turned out.

The challenge with extensions like this is always the roof. A brand new tile next to a weathered original sticks out a mile and instantly tells everyone it’s an addition. To get around that, we sourced second-hand handmade nib tiles to blend seamlessly with the existing roof, so the new build looks like it’s always been there. Small detail, big difference.

We also finished the ridge using a dry ridge system, which gives a cleaner, more weather-resistant finish than traditional mortar bedding and means far less maintenance for the homeowner down the line. It’s the kind of detail that separates a decent roofing job from a really well-considered one.

When did you last think about your chimney? Most people never do...until something goes wrong.

This Haywards Heath chimney had seen better days. Crumbling mortar joints, a deteriorating flaunching, no bird protection, and zero weatherproofing. Left much longer, and you’re looking at water getting into the stack, damp inside the property, and a repair bill that grows with every season.

Here’s exactly what we did to bring it back to full health:
Repointing: We carefully raked out all the failed mortar joints between the brickwork and repointed throughout, restoring the structural integrity of the chimney and stopping rainwater from tracking down into the masonry.
Re-flaunching: The flaunching (the cement bed that holds the pots in place at the top of the stack) had cracked and lifted. We stripped it back and relaid a new, properly formed haunching bed, bedded and angled to throw water clear of the stack.
New terracotta chimney pots: We fitted traditional terracotta pots, which are built to handle the British climate and look the part on an older Sussex property.
Birdguard UFO solid fuel cowls: These fit inside the pot and stop birds nesting in your flue, which is a serious fire risk and causes blockages that can push carbon monoxide back into the home. Essential for any chimney on a solid fuel appliance.
Storm Dry application: Once all the masonry work was complete, we applied Storm Dry cream to the entire chimney stack. It soaks into the brickwork, repels water, and lets the masonry breathe.

The result is a fully refurbished chimney stack that’s weathertight, bird-proofed, and built to last.
