A Little Piece of History 🔥

Every now and again, a sweep comes across something that makes stop for a moment and simply admire it.

Today was one of those days.

This beautiful Victorian fireplace, with what appears to be its original hand-decorated tiles, has survived generations of family life. And the hallway beyond it presented the original tiling too — a wonderful pattern and craftsmanship that I simply can’t imagine seeing reproduced in a modern home.

This one deserved the traditional treatment.

No rotary sweep today — just the old-fashioned manual sweep, brushes through the pot and a little bit of chimney-sweep magic. 🖤🎩⭐️

And there was plenty of evidence of a well-used fire. The quantity and quality of soot told its own story, whilst the chimney itself suggested the fire had been enjoyed with good, seasoned logs — exactly as it should be.

And then came one of my favourite little traditions…

When the brushes appeared from the pot, the lady of the house stepped outside and as they popped out of the terracotta pot, was granted a sweep’s wish. ✨

As a descendant of the Scottish Highlanders, I’m also rather partial to leaving a traditional Celtic blessing behind.

So, with the chimney swept, the fire ready for another season and a little bit of Highland good fortune bestowed upon the household, I left this beautiful old fireplace waiting for its next chapter.

I’m already looking forward to returning next year and seeing how this lovely home continues to tell its story.

This evening took me to the beautiful hamlet of Wycoller, nestled beneath Boulsworth Hill in East Lancashire. ❤️

I visited the home of a lovely lady who has recently moved into the area and wanted to make sure her multi-fuel stove and external twin-wall chimney system were all ready for the winter ahead.

A chimney sweep isn’t just about removing soot — it’s an important part of home maintenance and gives you the opportunity to check the appliance and flue system too, helping to keep your home burning safely and efficiently throughout the colder months. 🔥

Saturday morning sweeping took me to this Portway Arundel multi-fuel stove for a lovely couple in the Lancashire mill town of Barnoldswick.

The soot removed showed that they’d broadly been burning seasoned logs and smokeless fuel — which was great to see. 🔥

However, evidence of nails in the grate indicated that the stove had occasionally been used to burn pallets, so I was able to give them some good advice on what to burn and why.

Burning sensibly — using properly seasoned logs and an appropriate smokeless fuel — not only helps preserve the condition of your stove and chimney, it can improve fuel efficiency, be kinder to your pocket in the long term and reduce your impact on the environment. 🌿

It’s all part of getting the best from your stove and keeping it working safely and efficiently.

Because I’m more than just a sweep. 💟

A bit of a busman’s holiday for Wendy the Sweep today… 🧹🏛️

I’m in Stamford on business for my other job, but I couldn’t help being drawn to the incredible stone buildings — and, of course, the chimney stacks! 😂

Some of them are SO tall, and I spotted some really interesting architectural details as I wandered around. The stonework, the chimneys, the little passageways… it’s exactly the sort of thing I find myself stopping to look at.

I may have to do a bit of reading about Stamford’s buildings and chimneys because now I’m curious about what I’ve been looking at! 👀

Don’t worry though… I’ll be back in East Lancashire and West Yorkshire later this week, sweeping our Northern chimneys. 🔥🧹

Apparently, even when I’m at work in my other job, I’m still looking at chimneys. 😂

Do the right thing 🐦

I popped over to West Yorkshire, to the lovely village of Cowling, to sweep this beautiful traditional multi-fuel stove for a lovely lady who’s soon to be advertising this Yorkshire stone terrace as a holiday let.

When I removed the throat plate and inspected up the stove pipe, I found clear signs of a bird’s nest.

As we’re still within nesting season, I can’t simply remove it if there’s active nesting taking place. So, I’ve left it undisturbed and will revisit in early October to reassess and, if appropriate, safely clear it.

Sometimes doing the right thing means the job takes two visits. 🐦❤️

And that’s okay. Because chimney sweeping isn’t just about sweeping chimneys — it’s about knowing when not to sweep them too.

Then, on the way back to our accommodation, we stumbled across these beautiful heritage stoves on display in a garden in Dommartin-la-Chaussée.

What a fantastic little bit of stove history to discover while out exploring. ❤️

My daughter went to London… and somehow Wendy the Sweep got a shout-out from a town crier near Camden Market! 😂

She’d gone to see Bruno Mars at Wembley, then sent me a message saying, “Mum, listen to this!”

I never expected to hear Wendy the Sweep getting a mention while she was wandering around London!

Completely random, completely unexpected… and it absolutely made my day. ❤️

No chimneys today—just one of those little moments that reminds you how much fun running a local business can be.

Not every job I inspect leaves me smiling.

Earlier this week I came across a stove installation with significant gaps around the register (closure) plate. As a chimney sweep, it’s my responsibility to inspect what I can see and report anything that could affect the safe operation of the appliance.

These photographs show why attention to detail matters.

A register plate should provide a secure, non-combustible closure to the fireplace opening. Large gaps can allow soot and debris to fall, reduce the efficiency of the flue system and may require remedial work to bring the installation up to an appropriate standard.

What made me sad wasn’t the repair that now needs doing, it was knowing that someone paid good money, trusted a professional and believed the job had been completed properly.

Whether you’re a chimney sweep, stove installer or any other tradesperson, we all have a responsibility to do the job right. Good workmanship isn’t just about appearance – it’s about safety, professionalism and giving customers confidence that their home is protected.

I issued the appropriate warning notice and explained the findings to the customer so they can make an informed decision about the next steps.

One year ago today, I completed the NACS Accredited Chimney Sweep Course… and what a year it’s been! 🖤🧹🔥

Looking back, I honestly couldn’t have imagined where this journey would take me.

I’ve met some incredible people, made wonderful new friendships, learnt something new with almost every sweep, and had the privilege of being welcomed into so many homes across Lancashire and Yorkshire.

From pre-installation sweeps and bird nest removals to CCTV inspections, heritage fireplaces and beautiful British-made stoves, every day has been different - and I’ve loved every minute.

A mahoosive thank you to everyone who has supported Wendy the Sweep over the last year. To my customers for putting your trust in me, to fellow sweeps who have shared advice and encouragement, and to my family and friends who have cheered me on… thank you. It means more than you know.

Here’s to another year of keeping chimneys clean, homes safe, and fires burning brightly. ❤️🔥

This week was a little different for Wendy the Sweep… 🎩⭐️🧹

I had the privilege of visiting the home of ESSE, one of Britain’s oldest stove and cooker manufacturers, right here in the heart of Lancashire.

I wasn’t alone either. I was joined by Tom Milligan of A and B Milligan, Burnley, and Martin Glynn, President of The National Association of Chimney Sweeps, for a fascinating tour of the ESSE Stoves and Range Cookers factory, showroom and museum … with refreshments at the neighbouring Foundry Café after.

Walking through the history of ESSE, seeing how their stoves and cookers are designed and manufactured with such care, was a real reminder that great British engineering is still thriving.

💟 Every stove tells a story of craftsmanship, innovation and pride.

🎩🧹 As a chimney sweep, it’s always valuable to understand the appliances connected to the chimneys I work on. Seeing them built from the ground up gives me an even greater appreciation of the engineering behind them.

It’ll certainly make it even more special the next time I walk into a customer’s home and see an ESSE stove waiting for its annual sweep.
