Pick your own //

It's British flowers week and after a walk around my field this afternoon I've decided I have too many flowers that still need some lovely dining tables!

As always, I'm a bit last minute
A but I've decided to run
a pick your own THIS WEEKEND!

Saturday and Sunday morning from 9am until 10.30-11am. £30. Children welcome!

I've got some really lovely blooms and everybody loved the last PYO I ran. I'll provide buckets and snips, all you need is a vessel to carry your flowers home in.

I've popped the session on my web shop, Link here :

So it’s British flowers week and I’d like to talk a little bit about this very British enchanting flower. The pansy!

The pansy has been a very popular cut flower dating back as far as 1600 when it was Queen Elizabeth 1 favourite and so as it was the queens favourite flower it also coincidently was everybody else’s!
The Queen adored the flower so much that she commissioned clothes with the flower hand embroidered on and even items such as diary’s. The flower back then had a different name, it was the Heartsease.

The name Heartsease dates back as far as the Druid period. They would use the flower in love potions or if a person was suffering with a broken heart an infusion would be made and the pansy would be a key ingredient.

Fast forward to 1800s and the Pansy crazy took hold. There were societies up and down the British isles with 36 professional growers and over 400 members. The florist couldn’t get enough of this beautiful long lasting cut flowers and grew them in any little space they could to fill their shops with the joyful faces the Pansy brings.
The enthusiast actually slated the florist as ‘greedy’ as they would flower the plant to death and not try to preserve precious varieties by saving seed or taking cuttings!

The Pansy crazy in the cut flower industry seemed to frizzle out in the mid 1900s when it became easier to import flowers with the rise of global transportation.

I for one want to see these little gems back in all the florist shops and once again being a sought after cut flowers. So come on all my fellow growers, let’s make the Pansy big once more!!

Happy British flowers week to all! 🫶🏼
