The practice specialises in historic building conservation and heritage consultancy, with all of our partners and senior staff being accredited in Building Conservation, with either the RICS, the RIBA or AABC. Alongside the practice’s heritage work, we have built a strong reputation for our work in the residential and ecclesiastical sectors. We are also experienced in working in the educational, healthcare, commercial and public sectors; working on projects of all sizes, form repairs and minor re-orderings, to whole scale re-ordering projects, extensions and new builds. The staff and practice are experienced in working with traditional and vernacular building materials and types from a wide range of periods, combining our understanding of the historic and built environment, as well as modern and sustainable technologies to provide a high quality service for all our clients. We’re looking for a Part I Architecture Student to join our team in Bury St Edmunds for their ‘year out’ placement.

This is a great opportunity for a Part I student before progressing to Part II. Working within a small, friendly practice, you’ll gain hands-on experience across all stages of a project, from design and specification through to elements of job running.

Our work spans a wide range of projects, from domestic alterations to larger conservation and commercial schemes, offering valuable insight into different aspects of practice.

Repairs are underway at Trinity Methodist Church in Clacton-on-Sea: a landmark building we’re proud to be working on.

Dating back to 1877, the church has long been part of the town’s identity. Our role involves specifying and overseeing a programme of external repair works, including the spire and detailed stonework around the striking rose window, alongside targeted internal repairs within the main worship space.

The aim is simple: to protect the building’s long-term integrity while ensuring it remains a well-maintained, welcoming space for the community it continues to serve.

It’s a privilege to play a part in preserving such an important piece of local heritage.

We’re delighted to share that our private chapel in Suffolk has been shortlisted for the RIBA East Awards 2026 - one of just 18 projects selected across the region.

Inspired by Suffolk’s coastal heritage, the chapel takes the form of an upturned fishing boat, constructed in Norfolk flint and natural stone with exceptional craftsmanship throughout. A project shaped by collaboration with Matthew Seaborn and Donald Insall Associates.

Regional winners will be announced later this spring, with the opportunity to progress to the RIBA National Awards, and ultimately the Stirling Prize shortlist.

A proud moment for our team and the many skilled craftspeople who helped bring this building to life.

Whitworth has been appointed to support the external re-decoration of the historic, Grade I listed Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum, one of the earliest tide mills in the country and the last to remain operational, working for over 800 years before its closure in 1957.

Rescued and restored in the late twentieth century, the site now stands as a rare and significant example of Britain’s industrial and cultural heritage.

A vaulted, double-gabled design now links the home to a new studio, while floor-to-ceiling glazing floods the space with natural light.
