A week to remember at DFE.

We installed 88 No. 300mm diameter SFA bored piles at JCB Golf and country club in Uttoxeter to a depth of 6.5m. The piles were designed in house by our chartered engineer to support a range of compressive, tensile and shear actions.

Its not very often we see working platforms this good, not exactly the green but far from being in the rough. (Not AI - that's all me)

It was a mad dash to get the works completed and despite the best efforts of the concrete supplier, I made it home in time to welcome my daughter into the world!

Certainly had worse weeks!

Much to the delight of Rachel Reeves and diesel suppliers across the land, our Klemm 709 has been flat out this last month or so, completing just shy of 3,000 linear metres of pile across projects in Liverpool, Surrey, Stoke and Birmingham.

We have also managed to squeeze in 34 No. piles with our Kitten rig and a domestic project installing 150mm diameter bottom driven piles and ground beams.

Make hay while the diesel lasts....

As the sun sets on 2025, the DFE team concluded the year in Preston, installing 300 mm diameter CFA piles to depths of 13.0 m. Installed through layered cohesive and granular soils, the piles were designed in-house to accommodate substantial compressive, tensile and shear loads.

Our office is now closed until January 5th 2026.

A Week in Cockermouth for the DFE Team

The Dawson Foundation Engineering team recently completed the installation of 13 No. 220/190mm ODEX piles, cased to depths of up to 12.5m.

Using our Super Jaws overburden system, the casings were advanced through dense gravels containing a high proportion of boulders before being socketed into the sedimentary rocks of the Buttermere Formation.

To mitigate surcharge loading on the adjacent basement, the piles were installed using a kitten rig. This approach required rods and casings to be added in 1.0m sections - slow and steady work until the rock horizon was reached. Battling the unpredictable Cumbrian weather and working below the water table, the on-site drying room clocked up as many hours as the rig!

All credit to the team who took everything that was thrown at them and kept the project moving forward under challenging conditions.

Our in-house Chartered Engineer designed both the piles and the working platform for this scheme. The team will return later this month to complete the ground beams.

ODEX piling in Scotland? Nae Bother for DFE.

This week DFE have been enjoying a roll and sausage up the wee road in Falkirk, Scotland.

We installed 7 No. 220/190 ODEX piles, casing up to 6.0m through weak mudstone and intact coal seams before socketing 3.0m into medium strong sandstone. All piles were reinforced throughout their full length and tremie grouted with neat cement.

All piles designed in house by our chartered engineer and owner. We design and install SFA, CFA, Bottom driven, ODEX and screw piles. We also design and construct ground beams, slabs and pile caps. Get in touch or visit our website for more information.

This week the DFE team have been in Wigan installing 125 No. 300mm diameter CFA bored piles to 7.0m through stiff clay and socketing into mudstones of the Pennine middle coal measures.

DFE were appointed to undertake the design of both the piles and working platform for our client.

We opted for a Klemm 709-3G as the optimal piling rig for the project as this would limit the ground bearing pressures, facilitating an economic working platform design, whilst still allowing the piles to be formed in a single auger stroke.

The 709-3G combined with a 7 cubic metre agitator helped us complete the project 2 days ahead of schedule. Fantastic work by all involved.

DFE have just completed the piling at Barclays bank HQ in Knutsford.

We installed 24 No. 300mm diameter hollow stem grout injected SFA piles to depths of 8.0m with a kitten rig. Following consultation with an arboriculturist it was agreed that all piles would contain a 2.0m long cardboard tube to protect the root system of the adjacent trees by preventing leaching of the grout into the surrounding soil.

We completed the piling works ahead of schedule and the site is now ready for the follow-on R.C works.

This weekend DFE have been sheltering from the storm inside the old Ribbleton fire station in Preston. We even managed to install some piles whilst we were there!

We installed 25 No. 150mm diameter bottom driven steel cased piles to depths of 6.0m. The piles will be used to strengthen the existing foundations for redevelopment of the building into a bespoke residential dwelling.

The piles were installed only 200mm away from the existing brick pillars and in 3.2m of headroom. The piling scheme was developed in collaboration with the project stakeholders by our chartered engineer and director who was present on site to assist with pile installation.

Piles will be concrete filled and reinforced on Monday morning before we mobilise into our final project of the year in Knutsford.

DFE have been installing ODEX piles on a project in Ambleside, overlooking Lake Windermere. The steep and restricted access up to the site prevented all but the most compact of rigs from being mobilised with all equipment required to be towed to site.

We utilised a Numa Super Jaws system with a Kitten rig and a 500CFM compressor to drill 26 No. 220mm diameter casings through cobbles and boulders to a depth of 5.0m before creating a 1.0m rock socket into strong Igneous Dacite. All piles were subsequently filled with site batched grout and robustly reinforced to full depth with a cage and central bar as designed by our in house chartered engineer.

With the piling works now complete we are currently progressing with the formation of the pile caps, beams and retaining wall base at the site before moving onto projects in Preston and Knutsford before the Christmas break
