Phase 3 of our work on the Cathedral of the Peak in Tideswell is now complete! Fascinating to continue to work in such a historic building, and the LEDs we are installing will shed new light on the previously unseen intricate wooden carvings in the ceilings.

Want to get an electric vehicle but haven’t got off-street charging facilities? Or have you got an EV charger and want to make a bit of money or help the environment by letting others hire it? Or might you want to share lifts or rent out your car to friends and neighbours?

Drop-in advice sessions have been arranged in Buxton which will help residents, as part of the ‘Moving Together’ project, delivered by Hope Valley Climate Action and the Buxton Town Team. This encourages shared transport, including helping neighbours share EV chargers in order to increase the take up of electric vehicles and reduce the costs, as well as sharing lifts or hiring out your car.

The project makes use of the CoCharger downloadable app to help people share domestic chargers easily. Users simply set up your profile and add a payment card; there are no subscriptions, and the app takes care of communication, bookings and payments. Chargees can find hosts on an online map, then book appointments, hire the host’s charger, and get the reliability, convenience, and affordability they need to switch to an EV.

So if you have an EV charger you want to share, are thinking of getting an electric vehicle, or want to know more about sharing lifts or your car, come along to the drop in events (at the Library of Things (at Buxton Library, Kents Bank Road) 10-12am on Saturday 19th October and Repair Cafe (Methodist Church, Market Place) at 10am-12am on Saturday 26th October), take a look at the CoCharger and Moving Together websites, or email [email protected] for further details.

A Derbyshire church nicknamed the "Cathedral of the Peak" is to get a £200,000 replacement lighting system that will allow visitors to see some of its architectural features for the first time.

LED lighting is due to be fitted at the St John the Baptist Church in Tideswell, which attracts about 25,000 visitors annually.

Church bosses said they hoped the revamped lighting would mean more local groups use it for event space.

Electrician Dan Rhode, who is carrying out the work, said: “If you’ve been to the church before and you think you’ve seen it—you haven’t. You’ll need to come back when it’s finished and see it again.”

The new lighting will show the 14th Century building's intricate stone and wood carvings more clearly as well as showcasing its 45ft (13.7m) stained glass window and church organ.

It should also help reduce the church's energy bills by cutting the amount of electrity required to light the building from 20 kW to 4kW.

The project is being paid for my fundraising and grants but a further £12,000 needs to be found to complete the work.

Mr Rhode, from Current Standard Electrical, added: “We are being as careful as possible to look after and care for this ancient building for the future.

“We’re honoured to be in that space and working on this beautiful building.

“To be up close to parts of the building on scaffolding that nobody’s seen in centuries is very cool.

"It’s humbling to think that the work we’re doing now will have an impact on these services and events for hopefully decades to come.”

The building attracts approximately 25,000 visitors every year.
