A major roof replacement project is currently underway on a prominent building within His Majesty’s Naval Base.
Replacing the roof of an operational building presents a unique challenge, requiring a solution that protects the structure while ensuring critical activities within the facility can continue without interruption. To facilitate the works, a purpose-designed temporary scaffolding canopy has been installed across the entire footprint of the building.
Designed and delivered by Ideal Scaffolding (Southern) Ltd, the structure provides a fully enclosed, weather-resistant environment, enabling roofing works to progress safely and efficiently regardless of adverse weather conditions. By creating a controlled working environment, the solution minimises programme risk, protects the workspace below, and helps keep the project on schedule throughout the most challenging conditions.
The scale of the temporary works is considerable. More than 26 kilometres of scaffold tube have been utilised alongside over 2,500 metres of scaffold boards. The structure incorporates in excess of 114,000 specialist scaffold fittings, 48 beams, nearly 200 shear plates, and hundreds of structural fixings. Additional sheeting and roof coverings fully enclose the building, providing comprehensive protection throughout the construction phase.
At its peak, the temporary roof and access systems alone account for more than 19 tonnes of steel, highlighting the scale, engineering expertise, and logistical planning required before the roof replacement works could commence.
