Today was a great day, I visited the RHS Sandringham flowershow.
It is the first time it has been held at this venue and what a treat it was!
Here's my 3 highlights from the show....
1. My favourite show garden -
There was a great selection of show gardens, but the one that stood out to me was the Mindful Chefs Gathering.
It highlighted the neglect of traditional orchards in England and Wales, focusing on the need to protect this ancient industry.
The garden shows a small orchard, with a wildlife friendly understory of edible and ornamental planting.
I love the idea of using gardens to grow food and look visually pleasing with colourful planting, seeing vegetables next to plants in full bloom just makes me smile, to me it shows how two worlds can exist together, how we can put two totally different things together with two different purposes and they do not just survive but they thrive.
This garden also has a focus on natural materials and sustainability, demonstrating how gardens can be created with minimal impact on the environment.
Overall, it underpins the idea of domestic gardens shouldn't just be seen as isolates plots, but as a patchwork of interconnected habitats that, collectively, can help and resort local food production, nature and community life.
2. Seeing the Long Border designs -
These were a collection of 19 raised beds all designed by horticultural students and budding garden designers, these flowerbeds focused on the issues facing the natural world.
They were not just beautiful but also deeply thoughtful and thought provoking.
They highlight that you do not need a big garden to make it not only beautiful but impactful.
3. Attending the talk by Adam Frost -
It made me laugh and cry! He has long been a inspirational figure in the gardening world to me, he is down to earth and has no airs or graces about him. He is just doing what he loves to do, and in that, I can relate to him.
He also spoke of the healing power of nature and the garden. Something that I truly believe in, i believe that having your hands in soil heals the mind, and improves your well-being.
As if the talk wasn't enough, I also got to meet him and have a selfie with him!
He was so kind and encouraging, I even got to ask him a couple of questions!
What a wonderful day, shared with wonderful people.
