Final reviews for my design studio ‘ The Grotto After Nature’ today at Columbia University.

When I did the Glasgow School of Art Project in 2020 and said ‘ leave it as a ruin’ I didn’t mean it.
With news emerging that the school cannot afford a ‘ faithful reconstruction’ it seem that its immediate future will be just that, a ruined shell with internal bracing. This building resonated with me so deeply and still inspires what I do today. My proposal was an attempt to engage a larger conversation about the site, but it seems that the plot at the bottom of the hill will become uninspiring, generic student housing. This masterpiece deserves better, I hope we rally.

Invitations for
A single solid, quarried then subdivided and sent out as individual invitations to explore their platform. Each fragment is finished in itself and a piece of something larger. The rock is digital, quarried from a model rather than the ground, and printed back into sand so it takes form in a geological material. It sits in the ambiguity of our ecological present, where the category of nature as something separate from us and the things we make, is no longer a productive way to divide the world.

Tholos House
A full refurbishment of an existing house in Cambridge, England — named after its extension. Four load-bearing stone columns define the new volume, two of which are inhabitable, drawing on the ancient tradition of circular gathering spaces in Greek antiquity.
The clients had the confidence to push this idea, and the project is better for it. Detailed design is well underway with a great team — looking forward to getting it on site.
