THE NEW BUNGALOW.

More and more of the houses crossing my drawing board at the moment are single storey.

And I’m into it.

Long plans. Courtyards. Vaulted spaces. Big connections to landscape. Rooms organised around light, views and outside space.

Single storey doesn’t have to mean less architecture.

Sometimes it gives you more freedom to make something really special.

Could your garden hold another home?

The planning rules have changed.

The new NPPF was published today and there are some genuinely interesting opportunities for homeowners and landowners.

Large gardens.

Existing residential plots.

Small sites.

Sites within settlements.

Some sites just outside settlements.

Previously developed land.

Green Belt and Grey Belt.

Not every site will work. But some sites that have previously been discounted may now be worth another look.

CHICAGO → CAMBRIDGESHIRE 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

Planning approved.

A new home in Cambridgeshire, designed for clients currently living more than 4,000 miles away in Chicago.

From the first conversations, through design development and planning, this one has been a genuinely enjoyable collaboration across the Atlantic.

Friday brought the news we’d all been waiting for.

Approved.

Now we get to turn the drawings into a home.

A house shouldn’t end where the architecture ends.

FUTUREBARN last night.

Architecture meeting gravel, timber, water, weeds, wildflowers and a slightly unruly rural edge.

Nothing too manicured.

Just a home slowly becoming part of its landscape.

And Sid keeping watch. 🖤🐾🕶️

I love how buildings change depending on where you see them from.

Up close, this Victorian house completely dominates its more modern neighbours. Tall, proud and imposing.

But walking into our village green, the perspective changes.

The ancient trees take over and this huge old house somehow shrinks into the landscape.

Architecture can be powerful.

Nature usually wins.

A new barn for Hertfordshire, shaped by its setting and developed by hand, one line at a time.

Sometimes the quietest part of the process is the most important.

Architecture should disappear into the landscape.

FUTUREBARN wasn’t designed to dominate its surroundings.

It was designed to belong.

Timber that weathers naturally.
Gardens that become richer every season.
Spaces that feel as though they’ve always been there.

Sometimes the best architecture is the architecture you almost forget to look at.
