Halley VI - British Antarctic Survey

The Halley VI project was the result of an international design competition, set by BAS and the RIBA, to replace the existing Halley V research centre located on the 150m thick floating Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica.

The winning design put forward a modular solution, supported by steel legs on 'skis'.

Joyce & Reddington were chosen to produce full-sized prototypes of rooms to assist the design process. We then manufactured the finished bedroom furniture, personal workspaces and storage areas, Durat vanity units, Durat kitchen areas, computer workspaces, laboratory workspaces, toilet areas and communal space furniture, at our UK base, ready for export to the Antarctic.

Quality of design and finish were a key consideration in addressing the challenges of life on the isolated research base. A right-first-time attitude was also vital - with the pods travelling over 10,000 miles from the UK for final installation, there was no room for error.
