Popped out a little earlier today to replace a faulty 3 phase, 4 wire 400 volt KWH submain meter. Over time and the years the cables had become a little stiffer and I really didn’t like how they were pressed against the sharp edges of the hole saw holes but I managed to squeeze in some grommet strip to stop them cutting through the insulation. Phase rotation checked before and after just to make sure that all the motors would still be turning in the right direction after it’s powered back up.

Finally able to get this whacking 21 kw 3 phase 400 volt 3 phase 100 % electric system boiler wired in an S plan with Hive controls.. commissioned and fully operational now the pipework is corrected ( we didn’t do the plumbing on this one 😊)

Testing a house this week I came across this.. Someone must of struggled terminating it so cut a few strands off 🤦🏻‍♂️ so what was a 10 mm cable is now less than a 5 mm cable. I have seen this many times before and after all the years I have been doing this there is very little that would surprise me but things like this make me think how do some people sleep.

Another EICR carried out little earlier this week with remedial work including fitting RCBO’s to lighting circuit within the bathroom and downstairs sockets. Broken socket outlets replaced, broken main switch replaced, old tarnished brass none fire rated downlights with loose open terminals replaced. Now it’s all good to go with new tenants moving in this morning.

While I always prefer to give positive good news when I can but finding these faults early on is saving a lot of cost caused further down the line by stopping any more terminations of accessories burning out. One of this weeks EICR’s. I remember back a few years when Hagar brought out an RCD the the dual split load boards and it wouldn’t disconnect in the required time so Hagar upped the tabulated test current.. Most RCD’s have been superseded by RCBO’s any way these days now the prices are a bit more reasonable with them getting more popular.

When carrying out EICR’s I’m finding this only too often and lucky to have found this one fairly early before too much damage was done. This is the third one I have seen in just a week. A loose busbar or one that has been pushed in the wrong side of the terminal clamp. This is a real concern because the heat generated causes arcing and a real risk of fire hence the new requirements that consumer units are to be made from metallic none combustible material due to the number of fires caused by this. These more recent metallic fire proof consumer units are great as an extra layer of safety but I really shouldn’t be finding so many careless mistakes like this.

A nice way to finish up the week. Replacing a couple of old chandlers for something a little more subtle. I think these two light fittings give a far more homely feel and a chance to find and put right a dodgy connection where the wire had just been rapped around and pushed into the ceiling void.

Must admit I got a bit sidetracked whilst at Silvertrees Holiday Park today. I have seen this amazing fella tatting around at Silvertrees for a few years now. He never leaves the site as it’s a bit of a safety sanctuary for him.. Lucky him I did a bit of a shop on the way for some bits for dinner and lucky for me it was my privilege to finally meet him up close and share.
