UXO risk mitigation isn’t about assuming every excavation will encounter unexploded ordnance, it’s about making sure the right controls are in place where a credible risk has been identified.

Ground disturbance can interact with UXO that has remained undisturbed for decades, particularly on sites affected by historic bombing, former military activity, airfields, industrial targets or other wartime use. Where that risk cannot be discounted, excavation works need to be planned and undertaken with appropriate mitigation in place.

One of the most practical forms of mitigation for excavation works is a UXO Watching Brief, providing on-site support from a UXO Specialist Engineer while intrusive works are undertaken.

Having a specialist engineer on site provides several important benefits:

• Immediate identification and assessment of suspect items or potential UXO indicators encountered during excavation.
• Clear stop-work and escalation advice, helping site teams respond correctly rather than making decisions without specialist input.
• Protection of personnel, plant and surrounding assets by ensuring the UXO risk is actively managed while works progress.
• Reduced unnecessary disruption, with informed decisions made quickly should something unusual be uncovered.
• UXO awareness for the wider site team, so everyone understands what to look for and what actions to take.
• Confidence for clients, contractors and operators that appropriate UXO risk-mitigation measures are being implemented on the ground.

At RECCE Site Investigation, our UXO Specialist Engineers provide Watching Brief support for excavation and other intrusive works across the UK, backed by site-specific planning, UXO awareness briefings, emergency response procedures and technical support throughout the works.

If you have an upcoming project where UXO risk has been identified and you’re unsure what level of mitigation is appropriate, we’re always happy to have an initial conversation and help determine the most proportionate approach.

Dynamic Sampling is one of those services that can look straightforward from the outside, but the real value is being able to get the investigation completed safely, efficiently and with as little disruption to the wider programme as possible.

At RECCE-SI, we provide Dynamic Sampling as a standalone site investigation service, or with integrated UXO risk-mitigation support where the identified risk requires it.

Combining the two services can provide some significant advantages:

🔹 One coordinated investigation – Dynamic Sampling and UXO mitigation can be planned together rather than treated as separate workstreams.

🔹 Reduced delays on site – UXO precautions can be incorporated directly into the intrusive investigation, helping avoid unnecessary stoppages while waiting for separate attendance.

🔹 Improved programme efficiency – Fewer interfaces between contractors, less duplication of mobilisation and a more streamlined approach from start to finish.

🔹 A proportionate approach to risk – UXO mitigation can be tailored to the findings of the site-specific risk assessment and the proposed intrusive works.

🔹 Greater flexibility – Our compact Dynamic Sampling equipment allows us to operate across a wide variety of environments, including restricted-access sites where larger drilling rigs may not be practical.

🔹 One point of contact – Site investigation and UXO requirements can be coordinated through the same team, making communication, planning and delivery considerably simpler.

Whether the requirement is a straightforward Dynamic Sampling investigation or a project where ground investigation and UXO risk need to be considered together, we can develop an approach around the specific site, access constraints and required investigation depths.

If you've got an upcoming GI project and want to discuss the most practical way of delivering it, we're always happy to have a conversation.

I've not been very active on here, but we have been busy on site delivering UXO risk-mitigation support for intrusive drilling works across the UK.

When intrusive works are planned in areas with potential UXO risk, the right mitigation support is about far more than compliance alone. It helps protect people and plant, reduce unnecessary delays and disruption, and gives clients and contractors the confidence that works are progressing safely and responsibly.

Effective UXO risk mitigation can support:

- Safer planning and ex*****on of intrusive drilling works
- Clear on-site procedures and expert technical oversight
- Reduced risk of unexpected stoppages and costly disruption
- Greater confidence for clients, contractors, and site teams

At RECCE-SI, we support the safe progression of intrusive works with practical, professional UXO risk-mitigation solutions tailored to each project.

If you have an upcoming project and would like to discuss UXO support requirements, please get in touch.

We've been a bit quiet on here recently, but that's only because we've been busy out on the ground.

Over the last few weeks, we've been supporting projects across the UK, helping clients manage UXO risk safely and efficiently while keeping programmes moving.

From UXO risk assessments and awareness briefings through to watching briefs, intrusive surveys, borehole support and pile clearance, we've continued to provide practical, responsive support tailored to each project's requirements.

Alongside our UXO services, we also deliver geotechnical and geo-environmental site investigation packages through our trusted network of specialist partners, including dynamic sampling, cable percussion and rotary drilling, trial pits, soakaway testing and monitoring installations, with or without integrated UXO support.

One thing that has always been important to us is being accessible. We know that pre-construction and site teams often need quick answers, honest advice and a supplier who feels like an extension of their team rather than just another name on an email chain.

Whether you're one of the many clients we've had the pleasure of working with over the years, or you're looking for a proactive and approachable partner for upcoming projects, we'd be happy to have a chat.

We currently have availability for upcoming works nationwide, so if you have a project you'd like to discuss, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Yesterday, we delivered support in North London, supporting a domestic water well drilling programme with UXO downhole magnetometry.

While this may seem like a low-risk, small-scale project on the surface, the reality is that areas like Winchmore Hill and the wider Enfield borough were exposed to sustained bombing during WWII, particularly due to their proximity to key infrastructure routes into central London. High explosive bombing, combined with the widespread use of anti-aircraft defences across North London, means there is always the potential for unexploded ordnance to remain buried at depth.

It’s easy to associate UXO risk with large construction sites, but borehole drilling and water well installation present a very specific risk profile. Unlike open excavations where hazards may be identified visually, drilling introduces a blind, high-energy pe*******on into the ground. If unexploded ordnance is present, there is a genuine risk of striking it without any prior warning. That’s where UXO borehole support becomes critical.

By integrating staged downhole magnetometer surveys during the drilling process, we were able to assess the ground conditions incrementally and ensure that the borehole was advanced in a controlled and risk-managed way. This approach protects both operatives and the wider site.

Whether it’s a domestic well, a site investigation borehole, or large-scale infrastructure works, the principle remains the same. If you’re penetrating the ground, UXO risk should be considered.

Due to some recent programme changes, we currently have good availability to support upcoming projects, If you’ve got a project coming up and want to ensure it’s delivered safely and in line with best practice, feel free to get in touch.

We recently completed a couple of days on site in Stanford-Le-Hope, nice local one, delivering a programme of cable percussion borehole drilling and dynamic sampling for a client.

The works included breaking through hardstanding, cat scanned and hand-dug service clearance, borehole advancement, SPT testing, sample recovery, and the installation of multiple monitoring wells, all carried out in line with project specifications. The team worked efficiently to complete the scope within the programme, adapting to site conditions where required.

All boreholes were reinstated in accordance with client requirements, leaving the site safe, tidy, and ready for the next phase of work.

Due to some recent project delays and cancellations, we find ourselves with good availability to cover upcoming projects, so if you’ve got a project coming up and need support with site investigation or UXO risk mitigation, feel free to get in touch.

08/04/2026

After a busy first quarter of 2026 supporting projects across multiple sectors, and a well needed break over the long easter weekend, we’re now in a position to take on new work and support upcoming programmes throughout the UK.

For those less familiar with what we do, UXO risk mitigation is about managing the residual risk from historic unexploded ordnance on construction and infrastructure sites. While the likelihood of encountering UXO on most sites is relatively low, the potential consequences are high. Early identification and proportionate mitigation measures are therefore key to ensuring works can proceed safely, compliantly, and without unnecessary disruption.

At RECCE-SI, we provide a range of UXO risk mitigation services that can be tailored to suit the specific ground conditions and intrusive works being undertaken. This includes UXO Preliminary and Detailed Risk Assessments to inform project planning, UXO Awareness Briefings to ensure site teams can recognise potential hazards and respond appropriately, and on-site mitigation such as UXO Watching Briefs and borehole support using downhole magnetometer surveys. For more intrusive or high-risk scopes, we also deliver intrusive magnetometer surveys and targeted search and clearance operations to reduce risk.

These services support a wide range of sectors, including geotechnical site investigation, remediation, civil engineering, piling, utilities, rail, and archaeology. Whether it’s enabling safe borehole drilling, supporting bulk earthworks, or maintaining programme during complex intrusive investigations, our approach is to integrate closely with site teams, providing pragmatic, engineer-led support that keeps projects moving while maintaining compliance with industry guidance.

If you have a project coming up and need support, or simply want some advice on UXO risk and how it might affect your works, feel free to get in touch, the RECCE-SI team are always happy to help.
