We've been a bit quiet on here recently, but that's only because we've been busy out on the ground.

Over the last few weeks, we've been supporting projects across the UK, helping clients manage UXO risk safely and efficiently while keeping programmes moving.

From UXO risk assessments and awareness briefings through to watching briefs, intrusive surveys, borehole support and pile clearance, we've continued to provide practical, responsive support tailored to each project's requirements.

Alongside our UXO services, we also deliver geotechnical and geo-environmental site investigation packages through our trusted network of specialist partners, including dynamic sampling, cable percussion and rotary drilling, trial pits, soakaway testing and monitoring installations, with or without integrated UXO support.

One thing that has always been important to us is being accessible. We know that pre-construction and site teams often need quick answers, honest advice and a supplier who feels like an extension of their team rather than just another name on an email chain.

Whether you're one of the many clients we've had the pleasure of working with over the years, or you're looking for a proactive and approachable partner for upcoming projects, we'd be happy to have a chat.

We currently have availability for upcoming works nationwide, so if you have a project you'd like to discuss, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Yesterday, we delivered support in North London, supporting a domestic water well drilling programme with UXO downhole magnetometry.

While this may seem like a low-risk, small-scale project on the surface, the reality is that areas like Winchmore Hill and the wider Enfield borough were exposed to sustained bombing during WWII, particularly due to their proximity to key infrastructure routes into central London. High explosive bombing, combined with the widespread use of anti-aircraft defences across North London, means there is always the potential for unexploded ordnance to remain buried at depth.

It’s easy to associate UXO risk with large construction sites, but borehole drilling and water well installation present a very specific risk profile. Unlike open excavations where hazards may be identified visually, drilling introduces a blind, high-energy pe*******on into the ground. If unexploded ordnance is present, there is a genuine risk of striking it without any prior warning. That’s where UXO borehole support becomes critical.

By integrating staged downhole magnetometer surveys during the drilling process, we were able to assess the ground conditions incrementally and ensure that the borehole was advanced in a controlled and risk-managed way. This approach protects both operatives and the wider site.

Whether it’s a domestic well, a site investigation borehole, or large-scale infrastructure works, the principle remains the same. If you’re penetrating the ground, UXO risk should be considered.

Due to some recent programme changes, we currently have good availability to support upcoming projects, If you’ve got a project coming up and want to ensure it’s delivered safely and in line with best practice, feel free to get in touch.

We recently completed a couple of days on site in Stanford-Le-Hope, nice local one, delivering a programme of cable percussion borehole drilling and dynamic sampling for a client.

The works included breaking through hardstanding, cat scanned and hand-dug service clearance, borehole advancement, SPT testing, sample recovery, and the installation of multiple monitoring wells, all carried out in line with project specifications. The team worked efficiently to complete the scope within the programme, adapting to site conditions where required.

All boreholes were reinstated in accordance with client requirements, leaving the site safe, tidy, and ready for the next phase of work.

Due to some recent project delays and cancellations, we find ourselves with good availability to cover upcoming projects, so if you’ve got a project coming up and need support with site investigation or UXO risk mitigation, feel free to get in touch.

08/04/2026

After a busy first quarter of 2026 supporting projects across multiple sectors, and a well needed break over the long easter weekend, we’re now in a position to take on new work and support upcoming programmes throughout the UK.

For those less familiar with what we do, UXO risk mitigation is about managing the residual risk from historic unexploded ordnance on construction and infrastructure sites. While the likelihood of encountering UXO on most sites is relatively low, the potential consequences are high. Early identification and proportionate mitigation measures are therefore key to ensuring works can proceed safely, compliantly, and without unnecessary disruption.

At RECCE-SI, we provide a range of UXO risk mitigation services that can be tailored to suit the specific ground conditions and intrusive works being undertaken. This includes UXO Preliminary and Detailed Risk Assessments to inform project planning, UXO Awareness Briefings to ensure site teams can recognise potential hazards and respond appropriately, and on-site mitigation such as UXO Watching Briefs and borehole support using downhole magnetometer surveys. For more intrusive or high-risk scopes, we also deliver intrusive magnetometer surveys and targeted search and clearance operations to reduce risk.

These services support a wide range of sectors, including geotechnical site investigation, remediation, civil engineering, piling, utilities, rail, and archaeology. Whether it’s enabling safe borehole drilling, supporting bulk earthworks, or maintaining programme during complex intrusive investigations, our approach is to integrate closely with site teams, providing pragmatic, engineer-led support that keeps projects moving while maintaining compliance with industry guidance.

If you have a project coming up and need support, or simply want some advice on UXO risk and how it might affect your works, feel free to get in touch, the RECCE-SI team are always happy to help.

Putting 'Bert' through his paces this week. Southwark (pronounced Suvark) yesterday, followed by one of the closest projects we've done to date, 8-miles from the yard. Great way to see the week out before a bank holiday getaway.

We currently have availability week commencing Tuesday 7th April.

As we build on momentum, heading into our first quarter of our fifth year, it’s worth highlighting why UXO support remains a critical consideration for many projects across the UK.

Large areas of the country were subjected to sustained aerial bombardment during WWII, and as a result, unexploded ordnance can still be present beneath the surface, often at significant depths depending on ground conditions. These items can remain stable for decades, but intrusive activities such as drilling, piling, or excavation introduce the potential for disturbance, creating a very real risk to personnel, plant, programme, and overall project viability.

Our approach to UXO risk mitigation is designed to manage this uncertainty in a practical and proportionate way. Through a combination of detailed UXO risk assessments, UXO Specialist Engineer support (watching briefs), and intrusive investigation methods such as magnetometer-assisted borehole support, RECCE-SI helps to significantly reduce the risk in line with industry guidance. By identifying potential hazards early and maintaining oversight during intrusive works, we enable projects to progress safely and efficiently without unnecessary delays.

With a nationwide capability and a network of experienced UXO Specialist Engineers, we’re well placed to support projects of all sizes, often at short notice. If you’ve got a scheme coming up or one already underway, we’re always happy to have a conversation and see how we can help keep things moving safely.

πŸŽ‰Happy Birthday to usπŸŽ‰

Like many anniversaries in life, I tend to acknowledge them past the due date, which is why I got married on my birthday. However, this one was on Saturday, and it's family time at the weekend, so I have a valid excuse.

We will be celebrating 4-years of delivering UXO risk mitigation and site investigation support by continuing to deliver UXO risk mitigation and site investigation support, but older than we were last time. Yes, we do know how to party!!

Emma and I would like to thank everyone who has trusted RECCE-SI to deliver the support needed to complete projects safely. The last four years have been a great journey, we’ve been involved in some really interesting projects and, more importantly, built some strong and meaningful relationships along the way.

Here’s to another year of travelling across the UK, delivering UXO risk mitigation support and helping keep teams and assets safe.

Has been providing UXO Watching Brief Support for Excavation Works

We recently delivered UXO Watching Brief support during excavation works on a project located within a historically high-risk area for unexploded ordnance (UXO).

During the Second World War, vast quantities of aerial-dropped munitions were deployed across the UK as part of sustained bombing campaigns targeting infrastructure, industry, rail networks, docks, and urban centres. While many devices detonated as intended, a significant number failed to function correctly and remain buried beneath the surface today β€” often undetected until intrusive groundworks take place.

Excavation activities such as trenching, foundation works, service installation, and bulk earthworks can present a real risk of encountering subsurface UXO. The consequences of disturbing or striking an unexploded munition can be severe, posing a danger to site personnel, the public, programme timelines, and project costs.

Implementing a UXO Watching Brief β€” with a qualified UXO Specialist Engineer onsite β€” is a proactive and practical risk-mitigation measure in these environments. Key benefits include:

βœ” Real-time risk management and professional oversight during excavation
βœ” Immediate identification and safe management of suspect items
βœ” Reduced likelihood of project delays through informed decision-making
βœ” Enhanced workforce confidence and improved site safety culture
βœ” Compliance with duty-of-care and CDM risk-management expectations

Having specialist support embedded within the works allows excavation to proceed efficiently while ensuring that historical risks are properly understood and controlled.

If your project involves intrusive groundworks in areas with potential WWII bombing legacy, early UXO risk mitigation can make a significant difference to safety, programme certainty, and overall project success.

Our UXO Specialist Engineers are available to support excavation and ground investigation projects across the UK.

Railway infrastructure was a primary target during the Luftwaffe bombing campaign. Marshalling yards, depots, sidings, signalling centres and transport hubs were attacked to disrupt supply chains and troop movements.Over 80 years later, the legacy of this bombing still presents a real and often underestimated, risk during intrusive groundworks.

RECCE-SI recently provided UXO Watching Brief support during suction excavation works on a utilities-led rail project in London.

Suction excavation is a great solution for working around buried services. It allows contractors to expose sensitive assets in a controlled, non-destructive manner, reducing the risk of service strikes and improving safety in congested rail environments. However, while this method reduces risks associated with known infrastructure, it does not eliminate the potential hazard from unknown subsurface unexploded ordnance .

During the Blitz and subsequent raids, thousands of high-explosive bombs were dropped across London’s transport network. A percentage failed to detonate and remain buried within made ground, embankments, redevelopment sites, and historic rail land. This is why proportionate UXO risk mitigation remains essential.

Providing specialist UXO risk mitigation support helps projects to:

βœ” Protect site teams and the travelling public
βœ” Reduce programme delays and costly emergency responses
βœ” Demonstrate robust risk management to clients and regulators
βœ” Provide immediate expert assessment if suspect items are encountered
βœ” Maintain confidence when working in historically bombed infrastructure corridors

UXO risk is not limited to large excavations. It is relevant to all intrusive activities, including suction excavation, service trenching, trial pitting, piling, borehole drilling, and geotechnical investigations, particularly across rail and utilities projects.

At RECCE-SI, our UXO Specialist Engineers support various intrusive projects across the UK with practical, risk-based mitigation strategies that keep works moving safely.

We currently have availability to support your upcoming projects throughout the UK. Contact our team to find out more:

Just returned South from a couple of days delivering UXO risk-mitigation support for works in the North-East. There has definitely been an improvement in the weather, which not only makes the job safer, but it also makes working outdoors a bit more bearable.

I also managed to book myself into a converted nunnery for the night. Apart from the request of 'help' from 'Mary' immortalised in the stain glass and the wide selection of nun related horror movies that are stored in the back catalogue of my memories, it wasn't a bad place to stay. I'm pretty sure I nodded off by confessing my sins, as that takes a lot longer than counting sheep... Yes, I have taken a mental note to read the description and not just rely on the pictures next time.

For those that are wondering, UXO borehole support is a controlled risk-mitigation measure implemented during intrusive ground investigations in areas with a potential legacy of unexploded ordnance (UXO) In practical terms, it involves real-time downhole magnetometer screening of boreholes as drilling progresses, allowing us to identify ferrous anomalies at depth before intrusive works advance further.

The benefit is straightforward: it protects drilling crews, plant and programmes by reducing the likelihood of an uncontrolled encounter, while also providing documented clearance verification for stakeholders. For clients, it demonstrates proportionate risk management, strengthens due diligence, and avoids the disruption and commercial exposure that can follow a late-stage UXO find.

RECCE-SI currently has UXO specialist engineers available this week and next to support projects across the UK, whether for borehole drilling, trial pitting, or wider intrusive investigations. If you have works commencing in an area with historical bombing potential, contact the RECCE-SI team today,

RECCE-SI has battled through the cold, wet and occasional glimpses of pseudo sunshine this week, to support Solmek Ltd with borehole drilling operations in Hull, providing UXO risk mitigation during intrusive ground investigation works.

Hull was one of the most heavily bombed cities in the UK during the Second World War. Between 1940 - 1945, the city endured sustained Luftwaffe bombing due to its docks, industrial infrastructure and strategic estuary position. Large areas were destroyed, and like many heavily targeted cities, the potential for unexploded ordnance (UXO) remains part of the subsurface risk profile today.

While over 80 years have passed, the reality is that UXO can remain viable underground, particularly at depths consistent with modern borehole investigations.

On this project, we integrated UXO mitigation directly into drilling methodology through:

β€’ Downhole magnetometer surveying
β€’ Real-time anomaly monitoring during borehole advancement
β€’ Clearance verification ahead of deeper pe*******on
β€’ Defined escalation protocols

Why this matters?

Borehole drilling is a high-energy, percussive intrusion into the ground. In historically bombed cities such as Hull, implementing UXO borehole support is a proportionate control measure that:

β€’ Protects drilling operatives
β€’ Reduces the likelihood of uncontrolled discovery
β€’ Prevents programme disruption
β€’ Provides defensible, documented risk mitigation

If you have a project coming up and require unexploded ordnance (UXO) risk mitigation support, contact our team today. We currently have UXO specialist engineers available to support your projects WC 23/02, throughout the UK.
