Sixty years ago this 21 October, the village of Aberfan, near Merthyr Tydfil, lost 116 children and 28 adults when a colliery tip collapsed onto Pantglas Junior School after days of heavy rain. It is still, six decades on, one of the hardest mornings in Wales's history.

We've been part of Cardiff's story since 1821, and Aberfan's story has always been part of Wales's story - a loss that was felt across the whole country, not just in the valleys themselves. The memorial garden built where the school once stood continues to be tended and visited every year, a small, dignified way of making sure 116 names are never forgotten.

Beneath the grass of Trelai Park lie the remains of a Roman villa, believed to have been built around AD 130 and excavated a century ago by the renowned archaeologist Sir Mortimer Wheeler.

Recent surveys suggest the site may even have earlier Iron Age origins, connected to the settlement at nearby Caerau Hillfort.

It's easy to walk through the park today without realising quite how much history is beneath your feet.

Baby Loss Awareness Week begins today and runs until 15 October. On the final evening, at 7pm, candles are lit in homes across the country for the Wave of Light, in memory of babies who died during pregnancy, at birth or in infancy.

Some of the most important work we do here at Western Cemetery is for families who have lost a baby. There's no "standard" memorial for a life that was so short and so loved. For some families it's a small plaque, for others a heart-shaped stone or a single line of verse. Whatever feels right is what we make, and we take as long as the family needs.

If you're going through this kind of loss, or supporting someone who is, our door in Ely is open whenever you're ready, with no pressure at all.

Some jobs go far beyond a spec sheet.

Massive congratulations to the team at War Memorial Conservation Co. - our specialist sister company within the MS-Group Limited family - on completing the restoration of the Rustington War Memorial in West Sussex.

When decades of weathering left the original memorial too far gone to save, their stonemasons didn't just replace it - they recreated it. Every letter of the inscription was hand-cut and filled with black enamel to match the original. The wreath was hand-carved, leaf by leaf, after being roughed out on the CNC. The old memorial was carefully taken down and removed with dignity, and the new one was built up, section by section, on the very same foundations it always stood on.

The result speaks for itself: a memorial the people of Rustington can rely on for another hundred years, standing exactly where it always has.

Long before Cardiff existed, Caerau Hillfort stood watch over what would become Ely - a huge Iron Age hillfort built on an even older Neolithic site.

It's the largest Iron Age site of its type in South Wales, and one of the largest anywhere in Great Britain, with archaeologists still uncovering more about the community that lived there.

It's a remarkable reminder that this part of Cardiff has been continuously significant for thousands of years, long before it became the Ely we know today.
