【Volos' Ironman!】

In September, our very own Gavin Hazlewood is taking on Ironman Wales in Tenby, and not for the first time!

We’ve kitted him out with his new gear for the event, including his tri-suit.

Gavin has been training hard in the mornings, evenings and weekends to prepare for this challenge. Taking on an Ironman takes real strength, determination and commitment, and Gav has all three in abundance.

We’re all incredibly proud of him and can’t wait to cheer him on!

【Haverfordwest Public Transport Interchange – Progress】

Kier Group are making fantastic progress on the Haverfordwest Public Transport Interchange, with completion now fast approaching!

The pictures really do speak for themselves; the toilets are complete, EV charging points are in place, car park markings are down, and so much more is taking shape.

Hefyn was back on site last week for another valuation on behalf of our client Pembrokeshire County Council, and it’s great to see how much the project has moved forward since the last visit.

We’re excited to share the finished interchange with you very soon.

【Castle Street, Cardiff - Update 】

Construction continues to make good progress across Castle Street.

- Most of the EMT conduit has now been installed, with the remaining small sections due to be completed over the next month
- The majority of the southern footway kerb line has been installed
- Resurfacing works at the bus stops are now underway
- Installation of new Pennant paving has begun in Phase 2
- Sustainable drainage tree pits have been installed in Phase 2.

Further public realm improvements continuing over the coming weeks.

【 Work experience 】

Another week, another student welcomed to Volos. Last week we welcomed Romilly from Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf for a 4-day work experience.

Romilly picked up AutoCAD really quickly and used her time well, always listening and asking relevant questions. She also spent some time on site with Leo and Liam, visiting Castle Street to see a live project in action.

After spending time with both the Engineering and Quantity Surveying team, we hope the week gave her a good insight into the industry, and we wish her the very best for the future.

【 Children and Carers Summer Fun Day - Surrey】

On Sunday, Surrey County Council held their annual Children and Carers Summer Fun Day, and we were really pleased to be able to support it.

As part of our commitment to giving something back in the areas where we work, Alice travelled from Swansea to Surrey to volunteer on the day, helping hand out hot food and ice cream tokens to the children, families and carers who attended and on the busy Tombola stand in the afternoon.

It was so well organised, and there was so much for the children to do – play areas, sensory rooms, Bikeability, a climbing wall, inflatables, candyfloss, food stalls and loads more. It was lovely to see so many families enjoying the day together." – Alice

As well as giving our time, Volos was proud to sponsor the ice cream van and climbing wall to help make the day possible.

A big thank you to everyone at Surrey County Council and all the volunteers who helped organise such a brilliant day. We're really pleased we could play a small part.

【 He's done it! 】

A huge congratulations to Hefyn on achieving his honours degree in Quantity Surveying!

Hefyn has been working as a Quantity Surveyor while studying part-time over the past five years. Balancing work alongside university and raising two young children is no easy task, but through hard work, determination and the support of his family, he's achieved his goal.

This is a fantastic milestone and one that's thoroughly deserved. We're incredibly proud of everything he's accomplished.

Next stop... MRICS Chartered Surveyor! Always learning, always improving. Congratulations, Hef! 👏

【 Construction underway - Bath Road, Farnham Road, Slough】

Another couple of days on site in Slough for Ollie and Gavin, supporting the delivery of the A4 Bath Road and Destination Farnham Road schemes.

Working alongside our client, Slough Borough Council, and Volker Highways, the Contractor, we're providing engineering and quantity surveying services to help deliver these major infrastructure improvements. Volos also developed the detailed design for both schemes, so it's particularly rewarding to see the projects progressing on site.

Both schemes are now well underway and will bring significant benefits to local communities, including improved walking and cycling facilities, enhanced public spaces, upgraded junctions and wider transport improvements across the area.

With works taking place along some of Slough's busiest transport corridors, a huge amount of coordination is required to keep the projects moving safely and efficiently while minimising disruption to residents, businesses and road users. It's great to see the different teams working together to deliver these improvements.

Great to see progress being made and to continue supporting the team through the construction phase

【 Work experience 】

It was great to welcome Abiha, a sixth-form student from Cantonian High School in Cardiff, to the Volos office this week for a 3-day work experience.

Abiha is studying A-level Chemistry, Biology and Maths, and has an interest in civil engineering. During the week, she got a taste of the highway infrastructure industry, learning about both civil engineering and quantity surveying.

Abiha picked up AutoCAD really quickly and also spent some time on site with Leo and Liam Evans, visiting Castle Street to see a live project in action.

To Leo Marsh's delight, after spending time with both teams, Abiha felt that Quantity Surveying was better suited to her interests.

We hope the week gave her a good insight into the industry, and we wish her all the very best for the future.

【 Promotion 】

A huge congratulations to Leo Marsh on his promotion from Assistant Quantity Surveyor to Quantity Surveyor.

This wasn't a difficult decision, although it came much sooner than we had originally expected.

Leo has been carrying out the role of a Quantity Surveyor for some time, taking ownership of his own projects and consistently demonstrating the knowledge, ability and professionalism expected of the role. We wanted to recognise that and reward him accordingly.

He's our maths genius, has a proactive approach to everything he does, and is always looking for ways to improve both himself and the business.

Well deserved Leo, congratulations! 👏

【 Volos - Mid-Year PDR's 】

It's Mid-Year PDR time at Volos. This is a great chance for everyone to look back at what they've achieved over the last 6 months, set new objectives and think about where they want to develop next.

This year, team members have highlighted goals including PRINCE2 qualifications, working towards EngTech, IEng and MRICS chartership, and undertaking training that will support their personal and professional development.

But it's not just about training and personal achievements, our PDR process is aligned with our wider business objectives, with involvement in things like bids and internal operations forming part of that, helping build experience and push careers forward.

It's great to see the team taking the time to invest in themselves.
