🍂 Getting your electric blanket out for autumn? Check it before you switch it on.

As Cardiff’s evenings get cooler, many of us will be reaching for an electric blanket or heated throw that has been stored away all summer.

A few simple checks can help keep you safe:

✅ Look for frayed fabric, scorch marks or exposed wires.
✅ Check the cable, plug and controller for damage.
✅ Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using and washing it.
✅ Only leave it on overnight if it is specifically designed for that.
✅ Never use a hot-water bottle alongside an electric blanket.

If you find damage, stop using it—don’t attempt a DIY repair.

And if the socket supplying it is loose, damaged or showing signs of overheating, have that checked too.

⚠️ Intermittent tripping revealed more serious problems in this Whitchurch home.

This morning, we attended a property in Whitchurch, Cardiff, after reports of the RCD repeatedly tripping.

With no electrical testing carried out since 2012, we recommended an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). The findings prompted a deeper investigation.

We discovered:
• Severe burning around an RCD terminal and its connected cable.
• A 10 kW shower supplied through a 6 mm² cable and a 32 amp circuit breaker, raising concerns about the circuit’s suitability.
• Cables installed against heating pipes, with previous taped repairs by persons unknown.

The photographs show why electrical faults deserve proper investigation. Simply resetting a tripping switch can leave serious problems hidden.

⚠️ A burnt plug pin left in a kitchen socket—an early start and a serious reminder today.

We attended to investigate and repair a faulty kitchen socket. In the Penylan area of Cardiff. The photo clearly shows the damage: scorching around the socket and a burnt-off plug pin still lodged inside.

This presents a potential fire risk, and the exposed pin could cause an electric shock if the socket remains energised.

Please don’t ignore discolouration, burning smells, unusual heat or crackling from a socket.

❗ Stop using the whole double socket.
❗ Never touch or try to pull out a trapped plug pin.
❗ Have the affected circuit safely isolated and arrange for a qualified electrician to investigate.

A repair needs to address the cause and any damage to the plug, socket and wiring—not simply cover up the visible signs.

Worth sharing with someone whose kitchen sockets are hidden behind appliances.

We recently attended a home on the Roath area of Cardiff after an electrical fault was reported in the kitchen. While investigating, we found wiring and lighting equipment above and beneath the cupboards, with taped coverings, trailing cables and equipment supported on pieces of timber.

The photos show details that are easily overlooked when you’re simply using your kitchen every day.

Something working doesn’t tell you whether it has been installed safely.

A qualified, competent electrician takes time to check the supply, select suitable materials, secure cables and connections, and test the work before handing it over.

That care forms part of the price—even when another quote looks cheaper.

🍂 Getting the heater out? Check this before plugging it in.

With October arriving tomorrow, you might be reaching for a portable heater to take the chill off a room.

Before switching it on, here are a few simple reminders for Cardiff homeowners:

🔌 Plug it directly into a wall socket. Avoid extension leads and multiway adaptors when using portable heaters.

↔️ Give it space. Keep it at least one metre away from curtains, bedding and furniture, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

👕 Never use it to dry clothes. Clothing placed over or close to a heater can catch fire.

👀 Switch it off when you leave the room or go to sleep. Don’t leave it running unattended.

⚠️ Don’t ignore warning signs. Scorch marks, a hot plug or socket, or buzzing and crackling need attention. Stop using it and get the problem checked.

A heater coming on doesn’t automatically mean everything is safe.
