⚡️ Cardiff Homeowners – Is Your Electric Shower Safe? ⚡️

We were called out to a property in Cardiff yesterday after the homeowner noticed a burning smell coming from their bathroom ⚠️

On inspection, we discovered a 9.5kW electric shower had been installed on a 6mm cable — something that’s simply not suitable for that load. This had already caused damage to both the cable and the isolator switch, and could easily have led to a much more serious electrical hazard 🔥

✅ We safely repaired the damaged wiring
✅ Replaced the unit with a correctly rated 7.5kW shower
✅ Ensured everything was installed to current safety standards

💡 Why this matters:
Electric showers draw a lot of power, and using the wrong cable size can cause overheating, damage, or even fire risks. Unfortunately, we see this more often than you might think.

👉 If you’re unsure whether your shower installation is safe, it’s always best to have it checked by a qualified electrician.

At Reliable Electricians, we’re here to keep Cardiff homes safe, compliant, and worry-free.

⚠️ Cardiff Homeowners: Are You Charging Your V**e Safely?

Most people are aware of the fire risks associated with e-bikes and e-scooters, but many don’t realise that v**es also contain lithium-ion batteries which can pose a fire risk if damaged, poorly manufactured or charged incorrectly.

At Reliable Electricians, we believe that electrical safety starts with awareness, and a few simple precautions can help keep your family and property safe.

Why can v**es be dangerous?

Like mobile phones and laptops, rechargeable v**es contain lithium batteries. If a battery becomes damaged, overheats or develops a fault while charging, it can rapidly overheat and potentially catch fire.

While incidents are relatively uncommon, when they do occur they can happen very quickly and often cause significant damage.

To reduce the risk:

✅ Use the manufacturer’s charger whenever possible

✅ Avoid charging v**es overnight while you are asleep

✅ Never leave a v**e charging on a bed, sofa or other soft furnishings

✅ Charge on a hard, non-combustible surface

✅ Stop using the device if it becomes unusually hot, swollen or damaged

✅ Avoid cheap, unbranded chargers and replacement batteries

✅ Make sure your smoke alarms are working and tested regularly

One issue we often see is people charging v**es beside their bed overnight. If a battery fault develops, valuable time can be lost before a fire is discovered.

As lithium battery fires continue to attract attention from fire services, landlords and insurance companies, it is becoming increasingly important for homeowners and tenants to understand the risks associated with everyday devices.

A v**e may be small, but it contains the same type of battery technology found in larger devices such as phones, laptops and e-scooters.

A few simple precautions today could prevent a serious incident tomorrow.

Stay safe, Cardiff ⚡

As electricians, we are seeing more lithium battery-powered devices in homes than ever before. They power everything from mobile phones and laptops to e-bikes, e-scooters, power tools and cordless household appliances.

These batteries offer many benefits, but they also come with risks that every homeowner, landlord and tenant should understand.

Lithium batteries can become dangerous if they are damaged, overheated, charged incorrectly or used with unsuitable chargers. In some cases, a fault can cause a battery to rapidly overheat and catch fire.

Unlike many household fires, lithium battery fires can develop quickly and produce intense heat, making them particularly hazardous.

Common devices containing lithium batteries include:

🔋 E-bikes and E-scooters
🔋 Mobile phones and tablets
🔋 Laptops
🔋 Power tools
🔋 V**es
🔋 Cordless vacuum cleaners
🔋 Home battery storage systems

To help reduce the risks:

✅ Use only the manufacturer’s recommended charger

✅ Avoid charging batteries overnight or when the property is unattended

✅ Never charge batteries near escape routes such as hallways, staircases or front doors

✅ Replace damaged batteries immediately

✅ Avoid cheap, unverified replacement batteries and chargers

✅ Keep smoke alarms tested and in working order

✅ Store batteries away from excessive heat and combustible materials

Insurance companies are also taking a greater interest in lithium battery safety as battery-related fires become more common across the UK. This is particularly relevant in densely populated areas of Cardiff where flats, apartments and rental properties are located close together. A fire affecting one property can quickly have consequences for neighbouring homes and residents.

For landlords, tenants and homeowners alike, following good battery safety practices is becoming increasingly important—not just for protecting property, but for protecting lives.

Technology continues to improve our lives, but a little awareness goes a long way when it comes to electrical safety.

If you have any concerns about electrical safety in your home or rental property, the team at Reliable Electricians is always happy to offer advice.

Stay safe, Cardiff ⚡

Every year we receive a huge number of messages from young people looking to start a career through electrical and trade apprenticeships. While we are not currently recruiting apprentices, we wanted to share some advice that may help improve your chances of getting started in the industry.

Although we are electricians, this advice applies to almost any skilled trade — plumbing, carpentry, heating, roofing, bricklaying, plastering, engineering and many others.

Learning a trade can provide:
⚡ Long-term job security
⚡ Good earning potential
⚡ Practical skills for life
⚡ Career progression opportunities
⚡ Opportunities to become self-employed in the future

If you are serious about finding an apprenticeship, here are some important tips:

⚡ Basic qualifications matter
Most apprenticeships will expect you to have:
• GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above
• Science, Design Technology or practical subjects can also help
• Good attendance and punctuality at school

Even if your grades are not perfect, employers still highly value attitude, reliability and willingness to learn.

⚡ Present yourself professionally
First impressions matter. Have a simple CV, communicate clearly, and show enthusiasm. Employers often look for attitude and reliability just as much as qualifications.

⚡ Build a strong CV
Even without trade experience, include:
• Work experience
• Sports teams or clubs
• DIY or practical hobbies
• Part-time jobs
• Examples of teamwork, punctuality, or responsibility

⚡ Contact companies directly
Do not rely only on online applications. Call or email local businesses and introduce yourself properly. Many apprenticeships are filled before they are publicly advertised.

⚡ Consider work experience
Even a few days of work experience can help you stand out and show genuine interest in the trade.

⚡ Be willing to learn
Apprenticeships start with learning the basics. Employers notice people who listen carefully, work hard and show initiative.

⚡ Stay persistent
Apprenticeships can be competitive. Keep applying, improving your CV and contacting companies. Persistence matters.

Useful places to search:
• GOV UK Apprenticeships
• Local colleges
• JTL Training
• Trade company websites
• Local Facebook trade groups

For anyone trying to get into a skilled trade — keep going. Every qualified tradesperson started somewhere, and the industry needs motivated young people willing to learn.

Good luck from the team at Reliable Electricians ⚡

☀️ Staying cool during the Cardiff heatwave? Your electric shower could be working overtime! ⚡

With the warmer weather, lots of us are jumping in the shower more often to cool down — but increased use can sometimes show up problems with electric shower pull cord switches.

A few warning signs to look out for are:

⚠️ Crackling or buzzing sounds
⚠️ The switch feeling hot
⚠️ A slight burning smell
⚠️ The pull cord becoming stiff
⚠️ The electrics tripping when the shower is on

These switches handle a lot of power, and over time they can wear out — especially when the shower is being used more during hot weather.

It’s one of the most common electrical issues we see in homes across Cardiff, and thankfully it’s usually something that can be sorted quickly and safely.

If you’re unsure whether your shower switch is safe, we’re always happy to help and offer advice.

From our experience in providing a service and helping Cardiff homeowners and families for over thirty years. Many homeowners understandably don’t know what’s hidden behind walls or inside consumer units, especially in older properties or where previous electrical work has been carried out by unknown installers.

An RCD is an important safety device designed to disconnect the power quickly if it detects a fault, helping to reduce the risk of electric shock and fire.

If you have:
🔹 An older electric shower
🔹 Recently purchased a property
🔹 Had DIY or unknown electrical work carried out
🔹 Concerns about your fuse board or circuits

…it may be worth having your installation checked for peace of mind.

☀️ Enjoying the hot Weather in Cardiff? Don’t Forget About Your Home Electrics

When the temperature rises, most of us think about keeping cool, enjoying the sunshine, and maybe plugging in a few extra fans. But did you know that very warm weather can sometimes put extra strain on your home’s electrical system?

The good news is that most homes won’t experience any problems. However, a heatwave can sometimes highlight electrical issues that have been hiding in the background.

A few things worth keeping an eye on:

🔌 Avoid overloading extension leads with fans, chargers, and other appliances.

🔌 Check that plugs and sockets aren’t becoming unusually warm.

🔌 If you notice burning smells, flickering lights, or circuits tripping repeatedly, don’t ignore them.

🔌 Take a quick look at outdoor cables and extension leads before using them in the garden.

🔌 Equipment stored in lofts can be exposed to very high temperatures during hot weather, which may affect its performance over time.

Hot weather doesn’t usually cause electrical faults, but it can make existing problems more noticeable. A loose connection or overloaded circuit that copes during cooler months may struggle when temperatures rise.

If something doesn’t seem quite right, it’s always best to get it checked sooner rather than later.

At Reliable Electricians, we’re always happy to offer friendly advice and help homeowners across Cardiff keep their homes safe and running smoothly, whatever the weather.
