From work experience to apprenticeship – Evan’s journey at Evans Electrical!

Sometimes, one opportunity is all it takes to get a career started...

After visiting a college careers fair, Evan got in touch with us to ask about work experience. We were delighted to offer him a placement on a school where we were carrying out an electrical installation, giving him the chance to see the industry in action and experience life on site.

Fast forward, and Evan is now an Evans Electrical apprentice!! 🎉

Evan’s journey is a brilliant example of why we’re so passionate about offering work experience and opening doors for young people. It gives them the chance to explore a career, gain confidence and show what they’re capable of , while giving us the opportunity to spot and nurture future talent. 🤩

Investing time in the next generation takes commitment, but when you see that first opportunity turn into a career, it’s worth every minute.

Who knows where that first week of work experience could lead?!

This morning we were delighted to visit Cardiff and Vale College in Barry to give students an insight into what a career in the electrical industry can really look like.

Rather than hearing about just one role, we brought along a fantastic mix of experience from across our business including an Apprentice, a Site Manager, a Senior Project Manager and one of our Directors.

It was a great opportunity for the students to hear first-hand about the different career paths available, what a typical day can involve, and how you can progress and develop within the electrical industry.

We’d like to thank Cardiff and Vale College for welcoming us and of course, all the students for their enthusiasm and great questions. 👏

We’re passionate about supporting the next generation and showing young people the opportunities available within our industry. 🤩

Good food, great company and over 20 years of experience around one table! 😍

An absolute pleasure to spend an evening with some of the fantastic people who have been part of Evans Group for 20+ years. 👏

The wealth of knowledge, experience and commitment they bring to the business is genuinely priceless.

There was plenty of catching up, some wonderful memories of Mike Evans and of course, a few old stories that had us all laughing! 😂

Long service like this brings so much more than years on a payslip. It’s the knowledge passed down to our apprentices, the trust built with clients over decades, and the relationships that mean clients know exactly who they can rely on to deliver their projects safely, on time and to the standards they expect from Evans Group.

Some of our clients have worked with the same team leaders for many years, a real testament to the relationships and trust built along the way.

The benefit to the business is immeasurable. ❤️

Meet our new Apprentice Electrician... Evan! 👏

Before joining us, Evan was studying Plumbing & Electrical Installation at Cardiff and Vale College, where his interest in becoming an electrician really started to take shape.

Having gained work experience at our Fairwater Learning Campus site, he discovered just how much he enjoyed the work. Encouraged by friends and family, he decided that an apprenticeship was the right next step.

Now part of the Evans team, Evan is looking forward to experiencing all areas of electrical work and building his skills throughout his apprenticeship.

Looking ahead, his goal is to become a fully qualified electrician, gain his electrical “ticket” and work towards his testing qualification.

His advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship?

“Find work experience in a sector you’re interested in. I found it extremely helpful and it confirmed how much I enjoyed it.”

We’re looking forward to supporting Evan as he develops his skills and begins his career in the electrical industry. 😁

Meet our new Apprentice Electrician – Kirsty! 🤩

After 13 years working in childcare as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, Kirsty decided it was time for a change. Unsure of exactly what she wanted to do next, she explored a whole range of careers before jokingly considering becoming a “sparky” and decided to give it a go!

After gaining some work experience and discovering how much she enjoyed the hands-on nature of electrical work, Kirsty knew she had found the right path. She spent over a year looking for an apprenticeship, even starting a self-funded course while continuing to search for that all-important practical experience.

Just after Christmas, she contacted Evans Electrical and was invited in for a chat. She joined the team as a labourer before starting her apprenticeship in September and is now looking forward to developing her skills across all areas of commercial electrical work.

Her ambition? To become a fully qualified electrician and continue building her career with us here at Evans Group.

Her advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship:

“Do your research, and once you decide, go for it. You have nothing to lose you never know what opportunities are out there unless you go for it!”

We asked her for three words to describe her apprenticeship so far:

Inspiring the next generation of renewable energy champions!!

We challenged local primary schools to get creative and share their ideas about renewable energy and the future of our planet.

The response was fantastic and we were blown away by the creativity, enthusiasm and brilliant ideas from all the pupils who took part! 😍

But there could only be one winner… 🏆

We were so happy to be able to reward the winning schools efforts and donate an amazing £5,000 to spend on books, equipment and resources for their school! 💕

We’re delighted to support our local schools while helping children learn about the importance of renewable energy and the role it will play in creating a more sustainable future.

A big thank you again to everyone who took part, you should all be incredibly proud! 👏

Having just completed their induction day, we wanted to take the opportunity to capture this proud moment (minus a couple of faces which we will share over the coming months).

We would also like to give a BIG THANKS to Rhys Regan (JTL) and the Evans Group Team for their hard work to get to this point and their help and support during the induction day.

We also appreciate the continued support of our partners and clients, who recognise our investment and commitment to Social Value and that it is not simply a ‘Race to the Bottom’ based on finances, but that value can be calculated in many forms…

While we are thrilled to welcome this brilliant group, the reality of bringing them onboard comes at a cost! However, we refuse to let a lack of government strategy or foresight hold back these individuals, because as we all know, they are the future of our industry!❤️

Breaking Barriers: Women in Construction:

We are especially proud to welcome an additional female apprentice, bringing our total to three at site level, alongside and an additional female graduate already within the Group.

The construction and engineering sectors have historically lacked female representation, and we are determined to help change that narrative. True progress requires action, and by bringing these talented individuals into our trade teams, we are actively working to build a more inclusive, diverse, and modern workforce.

At Evans Group, we believe that investing in young people is a responsibility we cannot ignore. By funding these roles internally, we are choosing to bypass systemic hurdles to ensure all 14 individuals get the structured mentorship, hands-on experience, and career foundations they deserve!

Our new cohort brings incredible energy, diverse perspectives, and vital skills to our upcoming projects. We are proud to back them, even when employing people is becoming more difficult for companies in many respects. 🤨

Why do we pour thousands into the next generation of Welsh Sparks (even when it hurts our bottom line)?? 🤔

Our answer is simple: We build them from scratch, something we have been proud to be building on for over 30 years, providing local employment and training for young and mature people, providing the local social value that we all desire for our communities, leaving a real and tangible legacy. ❤️

Right now, we are heavily investing in training apprentices across Wales.

Truthfully?

Between wages, mentoring hours, and technical training, it costs our business money upfront!

But we refuse to take the easy route of just continually hiring casual subcontractors or using subcontracting firms, who may not meet the high level of Quality or Health & Safety standards of our clients.

Following on from last week's project video, we wanted to take a closer look at the full scope of works delivered by the Evans Electrical team at the Mermaid Quay Car Park in Cardiff. 🤩

This project involved the installation of a complete electrical infrastructure to support the day-to-day operation, safety and security of the facility, including:

✔️ LV distribution;
✔️ LED lighting and emergency lighting to lighting columns;
✔️ CCTV systems;
✔️ Access control;
✔️ Fire alarm system;
✔️ Containment for future EV charging infrastructure;
✔️ Electrical containment systems throughout;
✔️ Earthing installation;
✔️ Lightning protection;
✔️ Disabled Refuge System;
✔️ Data systems for ticket machines and entry and exit barriers.

Every commercial project relies on the systems behind the scenes to keep people safe, connected and moving efficiently. From power distribution and life safety systems to security and communications infrastructure, our team delivered a high-quality installation that will support the operation of this busy Cardiff landmark for years to come.

A fantastic effort from everyone involved and again to our wonderful clients GOLDBECK UK. Another project successfully delivered with quality, safety and teamwork at the forefront. 👏

Last week, our team visited two local primary schools to share what a day in the life of an electrician looks like.

The highlight... helping the students build their very own circuits! It was incredible to see their problem-solving skills in action and spark an early interest in STEM and the trades. 🤩

Thank you to the schools for such a warm welcome. We might just have some future sparkies on our hands! 🥰
