Before and after of a coppice coup cut at

The beauty of coppicing is that you can get a variety of products out of the woodland, whilst also making the habitat more diverse; here we cut an overstood, or, old, out of rotation coppice and from that got some materials for hazel fencing, firewood and opened up the canopy for better growth for future hazel stools. And it isn't just the hazel that will benefit - the increased levels of light getting in will encourage more flowers to bloom come spring time.

The sweet chestnut fencing is all finished up and ready for the cows. Chestnut is such a pleasure to work with compared to tanalised softwood. It's naturally durable so no need for chemicals, you can cut it and mortice in the struts without having to worry about treating the exposed timber and it's a coppice product sustainably grown in the UK. Oh, and it looks pretty dandy to boot!

January saw us out in all weathers - snow, hail, two storms with 60mph+ wind, some welcome sunshine and of course rain. Despite the weather we've finished a few tree planting projects over the last month - a hedge planted as a windbreak for an agroforestry system, a whole new walnut orchard with over 100 trees, a couple of fruit trees added to another orchard and some gapping up of old hedgerows with young whips.

No wonder Bryn is so tired.

Snow appreciation ❄️

I know it's been and gone but the snow was a lot of fun, even if it presented some problems for our work. We started fencing a new orchard in the sun and finished the job in the snow. Luckily the windbreak hedge was already in and planted, but we had to wait before we could plant the orchard itself.

Here in West Wales we're so close to the sea, it's rare to get snow and it was a welcome break from all the rain we've had this winter!

Meet Bryn, the newest member of our team. Swipe right to see George holding a spade for him as he digs in an orchard tree and Bryn skillfully operating the tractor throttle while he catches some shuteye 🙌🏼
