🌳 **Large Beech Tree Removal – Kirkby Stephen** 🌳

This week we safely removed a large beech tree in **Kirkby Stephen** that had unfortunately begun to decline. With significant deadwood in the upper crown, we needed the safest and most efficient method to complete the work.

To tackle the dead tops, we utilised a **Merlo fitted with a saw head**, allowing us to dismantle the tree safely from the ground. We had the pleasure of working alongside **Dryad Arb**, and it was seriously impressive to see both their expertise and the capability of the Merlo in action. A huge thank you to the team for all your help throughout the job.

I'd also like to say a massive thank you to the lads working with me. They put in a huge shift all day, processing and clearing the material as the machine brought it down, keeping everything running smoothly from start to finish. Their hard work and dedication made the job possible.

A massive thank you to everyone involved—it was a real team effort, and it's jobs like these that show what can be achieved when skilled people work together with the right equipment.

Tree removal completed today — a mature specimen brought down safely and efficiently for one of our clients. 🌳

Every felling job starts long before the chainsaw does: assessing lean, decay, and structural integrity, checking for TPOs and conservation area restrictions, planning the drop zone, and briefing the team on escape routes. Preparation is what keeps a felling operation safe and predictable.

Today's felling cut and back cut came together cleanly, and the tree landed precisely on target — a good reminder that skilled tree work is as much about planning as it is about power.

Now it's on to processing: limbing, sectioning, and clearing, with the timber going on to logs and chip for reuse.

Fully insured, NPTC-qualified, and committed to doing the job safely, legally, and to a high standard — every time.

There’s something deeply satisfying about cobra bracing trees. It’s not just about support cables and structure — it’s about giving a tree the best chance to thrive naturally while preserving its shape, strength, and future.

Getting to do it twice in just a couple of weeks has been a real joy. Every tree tells a different story, and careful bracing feels like working *with* nature rather than against it. Helping reduce stress on heavy limbs while keeping the canopy looking balanced and healthy is incredibly rewarding work.

Good tree care isn’t always the most obvious job to people passing by, but moments like these remind me why I love it. Seeing a tree safely supported and standing in its best form is a great feeling.

We were recently asked to a pub garden to carry out a repollard on a mature willow 🌿

This tree was originally pollarded due to decay at the base of the stem. With visible rot compromising its structural integrity, reducing the crown helps lower the risk of failure while allowing the tree to continue thriving safely in a busy public space.

Our visit involved re-pollarding to maintain that management cycle — encouraging healthy regrowth while keeping weight and leverage to a minimum.

Regular, informed tree management like this is key to balancing safety and conservation, especially with species like willow that respond well to pollarding.

🌳 Supporting Nature’s Comeback 🌳

After a recent fall, this tree needed a helping hand to get back on its feet. By carefully reducing some of the height and installing bracing, we’ve given it the support it needs to stabilise and recover safely.

We made a conscious decision to retain as much leaf cover as possible — allowing the tree to continue photosynthesising and rebuild its strength naturally. 🌿

Recovery takes time, and we’ll be returning later in the year for some light pruning to refine its shape and keep it looking its best.

It is a the privilege to play a part in preserving this tree’s future — giving it every chance to recover, regrow, and continue to be part of the landscape for years to come.

🌳 Caring for a Veteran Oak 🌳

This week’s project was something truly special — carrying out retrenchment pruning on a very old oak that had begun to decline.

With the tree positioned over a track and footpath, and close to a newly renovated home, safety was a top priority. Rather than removing this incredible tree, we carefully reduced the canopy to lessen risk while respecting its natural form.

Retrenchment pruning mimics the natural aging process of ancient trees — encouraging new, lower growth and helping to rebalance the structure. The goal? To give this veteran oak the best possible chance to thrive for many more years… even centuries. 🌱

It’s always a privilege to work with trees like this — preserving not just their beauty, but their legacy.
