Our North West division is entering the final phase of the Shale Cutting project on behalf of Network Rail, with works scheduled for completion over the summer.

Working alongside Ropetech, the scheme has seen the successful installation of soil nails, rock anchors, grout and slope netting delivered using rope access techniques. The team has also delivered:

🔵1,100m of crest drainage
🔵7,500 tonnes of haul roads
🔵2,500 tonnes of 6B stone placed to form an open ditch channel

Despite the challenges of a highly remote location, the team has continued to deliver high-quality results, that will help mitigate future flood risk and protect the infrastructure below.

đź‘Ź Our Story Scotland teams have successfully completed works on the A98 Banff Bridge Scour Protection Project, following over nine months on site.

The Category A-listed structure required essential scour protection to six piers and both abutments. Delivered in two phases, the project included a 250 metre cofferdam to divert river flows and enable safe in-river working.

Despite challenging conditions, works within the River Deveron saw the installation of over 2,900 rock mattress units, 3,600+ anchors and 280 sheet piles. 🌊

Story is proud to have delivered this project on behalf of Aberdeenshire Council , with support from Story Geotech and Story Plant Ltd .🤝

The completion of the works was marked with an end-of-project event on site, including speeches, photocalls and a final site walk and bridge inspection, before the team came together at Grow At The Vinery to reflect on the project’s success. 🎉📸

🏆 Story named Rail Supplier of the Year for the second time running at the Scottish Transport Awards 2026

We’re proud to announce that Story Contracting’s Transportation Division in Scotland has been named Rail Supplier of the Year for the second consecutive year - a fantastic achievement that reflects the dedication and expertise of our teams.

This recognition celebrates the successful delivery of a complex programme of works in partnership with Scotland's Railway, including four major projects delivered over the Christmas and New Year period. Across more than 47,000 working hours, our teams maximised constrained access to the railway, reducing disruption for passengers while improving performance, reliability and long-term resilience.

Through innovative planning and collaborative delivery, we completed high volumes of work within restricted timeframes, delivering outputs that would typically require months of weekend closures.

and Heidelberg Materials UK recently carried out works to improve footpaths and parking at Eden Valley Hospice in Carlisle, helping residents, staff and visitors move around safely, as part of our commitment to supporting our local communities.

These upgrades create a more accessible, welcoming space for everyone using the hospice, making a difference to daily experiences for residents and their families.

Thanks to our partners at Story Plant Ltd, Tuer Plant Hire, North West Recycling Ltd, and JT Atkinson Builders Merchant for helping to deliver the works and making an impact in the local area.

Did you know the very first plant machine we bought in 1987 is still with us today?

After being fully restored by the first member of Malcolm Kirkaldy, as part of celebrations for our 35th anniversary in 2022, it now takes pride of place in reception at our head office in Carlisle.

The machine stands as a lasting reminder of our history, reminding us how far we’ve come, from just a handful of people back in 1987 to over 1,000 colleagues in 2026.

🗓️ Throwback to June 2020 - Horden Station

In June 2020, we were proud to successfully deliver major improvements at Horden Station, enhancing accessibility for passengers and staff.

The project included:

âś… Construction of two 100-metre-long platforms
âś… Installation of a new footbridge and ramps, lifted into place using a 500-tonne crane
âś… Delivery of new power and communications infrastructure

Despite a number of challenges, the team adapted at every stage to keep the project on track. Their resilience, collaboration, and dedication were key to its successful delivery.

Here’s one of three lift shafts making its way from Carver Engineering Services's workshop to our Luton Access for All project for Network Rail 🚧

🙌In the past few months, we’ve engaged over 600 students through STEM in the Park, Story Elevate, school visits and careers sessions, helping to inspire the next generation and showcase the opportunities our industry has to offer.

And it doesn't stop there, our colleagues have also been giving back through volunteering, supporting initiatives such as community centre renovations, environmental projects, and charity partnerships.
