Another stunning project coming to completion — the new Fairfield School in Cockermouth.

The works involved the installation of a complete Sika high-performance roofing system, consisting of:

• SikaVap 5000 SA Vapour Control Layer
• SikaTherm Insulation
• The ever-reliable Sikaplan® G 1.8mm membrane

For the solar installation, we incorporated Sika Roof Anchors, providing a fully waterproof solution while allowing the solar framework to be bolted directly into position — a fast, efficient and dependable system.

The architects wanted the appearance of a traditional standing seam fascia and selected Vestis aluminium in MZ Slate Grey — a stunning finish that complements the building perfectly.

As you can see from the workmanship, the panels have been installed with precision: crisp lines, sharp folds and an exceptionally clean finish. Aesthetically pleasing, technically correct and built to perform.

The key to a successful refurbishment is choosing a company with the experience and expertise to identify the underlying issues within an existing roofing system and deliver a solution that genuinely works.

This building had been subjected to years of unsuccessful repairs, with each attempt failing to resolve the underlying problems. The client approached us to provide a permanent solution that would eliminate the recurring issues once and for all.

To achieve this, we organised a detailed site meeting with our key supply chain partners, Sika and Kingspan. Following a thorough inspection, a bespoke specification was developed to address every aspect of the roof's condition.

The refurbishment involved the complete removal of the problematic roof section, revealing what can only be described as a roofer's nightmare. The existing liner, failed timber, saturated insulation, and years of accumulated debris and sludge were all removed. The gutters were mechanically prepared by sanding them back to a sound surface before receiving a new Sika tapered insulation system, designed to create positive falls towards the outlets and eliminate standing water.

All timber upstands and wall details were replaced, while the existing aluminium copings were carefully prepared, sanded, and primed with a two-pack primer to ensure long-term adhesion. Finally, the entire area, including the new gutter system, was finished with the Sika Decothane liquid waterproofing system, creating a seamless, fully bonded waterproof membrane capable of providing exceptional long-term performance.

This has been one of the most labour-intensive refurbishment projects we have undertaken, but it perfectly demonstrates the value of investing in the right solution rather than another temporary repair. The finished system will provide the client with a durable, watertight roof that is designed to protect this section of the building for decades to come.

Today we installed 100m² of Sikavap high-performance 2.4mm self-adhesive air and vapour control layer in just 2 hours, providing an immediate watertight seal and allowing internal works to continue without interruption.

This roof will be completed using a fully specified Sika roofing system, incorporating the Sarnafil AT single ply membrane. Installed in accordance with Sika's specification by a Sika Certified Contractor, this system provides exceptional long-term performance, durability and quality assurance.

Refurbishment works are ongoing on this large building, and the key to a successful repair is carrying out detailed site surveys to determine the correct methodology. This ensures the gutter system is made fully efficient, watertight, and allows the affected rooms to be reopened and returned to normal use.

The specification for this project involves removing the existing gutter liner, along with numerous historic patch repairs that have built up over the years. The existing steel gutters are then thoroughly prepared before installing a high-performance vapour control layer (VCL), tapered insulation to improve drainage, and a Sika Decothane high-performance liquid waterproofing system.

All walls and coping details are carefully prepared to receive the Decothane coating, creating a fully seamless waterproof system with no joints or weak points. Once complete, the refurbished gutter will provide a durable, long-lasting solution backed by a manufacturer-supported guarantee, giving the client confidence that the building is protected for years to come.
