Which? are warning that a convincing scam letter is doing the rounds purporting to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The letter states, ‘we need you to verify your financial information’ and claims to be in response to a ‘recent government initiative aimed at verifying declared income.’ The scammers request bank details and a copy of your driving licence or passport, giving them what they need to commit identify fraud.
An indicator that this is a scam letter is that it includes a dubious email address - [email protected]. Although the public can normally contact HMRC via a telephone call or by post, their actual email addresses include .gov.uk.
