Feel free and to come and grill me and my fellow (much higher qualified) panel post film!

The new Cornwall Climate Care film 'Beyond Bricks' (watch the trailer by clicking here) will be shown at 7pm on March 22 at the Community Hall in Kingsand.

This film showcases some important and fascinating stories as it asks how we can create the housing that is so desperately needed in the UK - while having as little impact on the environment and climate as possible. Currently, construction and energy use in housing are responsible for a whopping one-third of the country's climate emissions.

Tickets are available either at the Kingsand Spar or online by clicking here.

There will be a raffle, refreshments and the screening will be followed by an expert Q&A where you can delve more into the issues + raise all your burning questions!

Often when people say “should I be worried about this” on my structural engineering site visits, the answer is no…in this case however, the unusual design has clearly failed and needed support before proper rectification. We intend to redesign this solution to make it easier for the client to install retrospectively and to ensure it doesn’t fail again!

As many of you will know I’m presenting a film about the climate impact of construction that will be premiering this month and I invite anyone with an interest in construction to come and see. Details in the link.

In an homage to the film, we’re setting ourselves a simple but meaningful challenge as a company.

Whenever we’re faced with two or more functionally equivalent options, we’re going to actively choose — and track — the lower-carbon alternative.

This isn’t about radical change or grand gestures. It’s about the everyday decisions that quietly add up.

For example:
• Choosing a timber beam instead of a steel beam where performance and safety allow
• Retaining and renovating existing flooring rather than removing and replacing it
• Reusing, adapting, or repairing materials instead of defaulting to new

Individually, these choices might seem small. But collectively — across projects, months, and years — they represent real, measurable carbon savings.

In 2026, we’ll be keeping track of these decisions and the carbon emissions avoided as a result. Not to claim perfection, but to build awareness, accountability, and better habits into how we work.

We believe that sustainability often starts with asking a simple question:
“Is there a lower-carbon way to achieve the same outcome?”

We’re looking forward to sharing what we learn along the way.
