In the first picture is an interceptor trap. These were installed on domestic drainage systems to prevent gases from the main sewer entering the domestic drainage system.
As all waste outlets a trapped they are no longer necessary and can contribute to untimely blockages.
This one was broken and causing regular blockages so it was removed and replaced with a straight piece of pipe that is connected to the outfall using a patch repair.

Land drainage installed in a very wet garden during a very wet period back in April.
Two trenches were dug across the wet areas of the garden to a ditch and stone and perforated pipe installed. The groundwater soaks into the stone channels and the pipe carries it out to the ditch.
