Back from holiday with a few unexplained bites?

Travel can increase the chance of bringing bed bugs home, particularly after busy summer trips. But bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs. Reactions vary between people, and several other things can cause similar marks.

Check:

🛌 Mattress seams and labels
🛌 Bed frames and headboards
🛌 Suitcase seams and pockets
🛌 Bedding for insects, shed skins or small dark spotting

Avoid moving bedding, luggage or furniture into another room until you know what you’re dealing with, as this could spread any activity.

The call started with "it's probably nothing, but…"

It usually does. This one was a homeowner in Essex who'd heard the odd noise for months and hoped it would sort itself out. By the time we lifted the loft boards, the insulation was nested through, the wiring was chewed, and a straightforward two visit job had become a full clearance, proofing and re-insulation project.

Nobody gets judged for this. Hoping a problem disappears is human, people worry about the cost, the disruption, even what the neighbours might think. But pests don't do exits. They do expansion.

The cheapest call-out we ever make is the one where we get to say "you caught this early, it's a small job." We'd genuinely rather have that conversation.

It's that time of year when wasp nests reach full size....and full temper.

A mature nest in late July can contain up to 5,000 wasps. By this point in the season, they're protective, unpredictable and best left well alone.

If you've noticed wasps coming and going from the same spot, under eaves, in a loft, behind a wall, that's a nest.

DIY sprays rarely deal with it properly and can make things worse. Our technicians deal with wasp nests safely and quickly, usually in a single visit.

Peppermint oil doesn't repel rats. We've watched them walk straight past it.

Every week we attend homes across Essex where the windowsills smell like a sweet shop and the loft still sounds like a drum kit. Here's why it fails: rats aren't in your house because it smells nice. They're there for warmth, food and shelter and a mild minty whiff doesn't outweigh any of those.

Same goes for ultrasonic plug-ins, mothballs and cotton wool soaked in anything. At best, they move a rat two feet to the left.

What actually works: find the entry point and close it, remove the food source, treat what's already inside. Less Instagram friendly. Considerably more effective.

An EHO doesn't need to see a fly. One customer photo is enough.

For restaurants and food businesses, flies aren't a nuisance, they're evidence. Evidence of a drainage issue, a waste problem or a proofing gap, and Environmental Health Officers read them exactly that way. So do customers. The difference is customers publish their findings on Google.

Fly control in a commercial kitchen isn't a spray on a Friday. It's fly screens, drain treatments, waste protocols and monitoring records you can put in front of an inspector without flinching. That's the gap between a documented pest management contract and hoping for the best.

We find the pest last. Here's what we look for first.

Anyone can spot a mouse. The skill is finding the gap under the kitchen units it came through, the trail behind the washing machine, and the reason it picked your house in the first place. That's why every Pest ID job starts with an inspection, not a spray gun.

Wasps flying to the same spot every thirty seconds? That's a flight path and it leads to a nest.

In July, wasp nests across Essex go from golf ball to football in a matter of weeks. The giveaway isn't the nest itself, it's the traffic. A steady stream to the same fascia board, air brick or shed corner means there's a colony behind it, and by August it could hold thousands.

The worst time to deal with a nest is late summer, when the colony peaks and turns defensive. The best time is now, while it's small and the wasps are busy building rather than guarding. And whatever the internet suggests, don't jet-wash it. We've seen how that ends.

3 things every landlord should do before a summer let.

Summer tenancy changeovers are coming. Here's a short checklist before you hand over the keys.

3 things worth checking now:

1. ENTRY POINTS
Check around pipework, skirting boards and brickwork for gaps wider than a pencil. That's enough for a mouse. Seal anything suspicious before you hand over.

2. SIGNS OF ACTIVITY
Fresh droppings near kitchen units, gnaw marks on wood or plastic, or grease marks along walls are all active signs. Don't assume a clean looking property is problem free.

3. PREVIOUS TREATMENT RECORDS
If the property has had a pest issue before, know the history. Recurring problems indicate an unresolved entry point, not just an unlucky infestation.
