The bait’s gone. So why are the rats still there?

It doesn't necessarily mean the bait "doesn't work". There are several reasons a rodent treatment can fail, and simply putting more bait down isn't always the answer.

Some rat populations in the UK have developed resistance to certain anticoagulant rodenticides. Rats can also be reluctant to enter bait stations or take unfamiliar food, while poor bait placement, competing food sources and rats moving in from surrounding areas can all affect the success of a treatment.

That's why professional rodent control starts with understanding the site.

Where are they getting in?
Where are they feeding and drinking?
Where are they sheltering?
What evidence tells us where they're travelling?

From there, the right control measures can be chosen. That may include rodenticide where appropriate, but proofing, reducing access to food and water, removing harbourage and other control methods can be just as important.

For landlords and commercial premises, getting this right matters. Repeatedly treating the rodents you can see without addressing what's allowing them to thrive can leave you dealing with the same problem again.

Before the weather turns properly cold, it's worth doing a quick prevention check around the house: gaps around doors and pipework sealed, bins secured, and any obvious food sources tidied away.

It won't rule out every possibility, but it does reduce the chance of unwanted company as things cool down outside and shelter indoors starts looking more appealing to pests.

It's a common assumption, older buildings have more gaps, more history, so surely pests are just part of the deal. But age alone doesn't determine risk in the way people expect.

What actually matters more is proofing, maintenance, and what's around the building, food sources, waste storage, nearby vegetation. A well-maintained older property can be lower risk than a newer one with poor proofing.
