Great news from two of our sites 😀

Site Managers David McClement at the Royal Masonic School for Girls in Hertfordshire and Steve Holloway at a farmhouse restoration project in Essex, have both received top marks in recent independent health and safety inspections.

These inspections recognise sites that are well organised, well managed and where everyone is committed to working safely. Achieving this takes effort from the whole team, and it's great to see that recognised. Well done to them, and to the whole team behind it.

We had a great day on Frinton Beach taking part in the recent Daniel Connal Partnership 2026 Sandcastle Competition.

We were delighted to not only take part but we were also delighed to win 🥇with our World Cup creation inspired by Paul the Octopus who became famous during the 2010 FIFA World Cup for making surprisingly accurate match predictions. 🐙⚽🏆

We placed one of his long tentacles on the England flag so fingers crossed Paul's prediction comes true on Saturday night! 🤞🤞

A big thanks to all our team members for taking part, to all our fellow contestants and to Daniel Connal for organsing a great event. 😎

Shortlisted in the National Federation of Builders Annual Awards for our project at St Mary’s Church, Hitchin in the category:

Remarkable Restoration and Renovation / Heritage and Conservation Project

The scheme involved flint and stonemasonry, reordering, new facilities and traditional joinery:

🛠 Restoration of four large Gothic tracery windows (each approx. 15ft x 8ft), including glazing repairs and structural and stone restoration.

🛠 Stone and flint masonry conservation to the North Aisle walls, including repairs to clunch dressings, string courses, buttresses, quoins, and plinths.

🛠 Re-ordering of the tower to create modern, accessible facilities including four lavatories (one fully accessible), utility space, and chair storage, with levelling access from the Nave, and bespoke oak panelling with brass detailing throughout.

🛠 Installation of a breathable limecrete floor with underfloor heating, finished with handmade pamment tiles.

🛠 Introduction of modern water and drainage infrastructure, involving a new plant room.

St Mary’s Church, is one of Hertfordshire’s largest parish churches and a Grade I listed building dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries.

We’re incredibly proud of the craftsmanship, collaboration, and care that went into delivering this project and we are delighted to receive this nomination in recognition of what was achieved.

The project at a Grade II listed farmhouse in Essex has involved a full property renovation both inside and out, including removal of external cement render, timber frame repairs, and the application of new lime render to the whole property.

We had a training focused week last week combining in-house training with out on-site experience.

James from the Colchester Institute came to our Joinery Department where he led our annual skills assessment which is an important opportunity to review and maintain the high standards of our craft.

Meanwhile, another part of our team were out on site undertaking specialist training on the DOFF cleaning system, a method that uses superheated water vapour at low pressure to clean delicate stonework and historic surfaces without causing damage.

A great week of learning, development and keeping our skills sharp.

It was a lovely sunny morning when we moved into St Peter's & St Paul's Church in Swanscombe, Kent to start the stonework conservation work and the roof and rainwater goods repairs. Here's some sunny pictures shared by our Site Manager Colin.

📣 Latest Project 📣: Conservation works have begun on the magnificent Grade II listed Chapel at the Royal Masonic School for Girls in Hertfordshire.

Our works programme involves:

🔹 Repair and re-roofing of the chapel roof.
🔹 Increasing gutter capacity.
🔹 Improving rainwater removal through downpipes and drainage upgrades.

The chapel has been closed since 2022 following the discovery of damp and cracking to the plaster ceiling. A condition survey identified that the original roof design, gutters and rainwater outlets could not cope with our ever-increasing rainfall patterns. Overtime this resulted in water penetrating the roof structure and damaging the ceiling below. Work is now underway to resolve this issue.

We are delighted to be moving forward with this project and look forward to sharing more information as the work progresses.

A little bit of history:📜 Designed by architect J.L Denman between 1928 – 1933, the chapel is one of the most distinctive buildings on the school grounds with a six-bay barrel-vaulted nave with exposed brickwork, transverse ribs, groin-vaulted aisles, and detailed carvings. The interior features a gilt frieze and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Jesus.
