A few more jobs squeezed into today…

First stop was Boldon, removing a few small shrubs tucked tightly against a wall. Access was tight, but that’s where the FSI B22 comes into its own. Small, nimble, and more than capable of getting into those awkward spots.

Then it was off to Cramlington to tackle a chunky softwood stump with plenty of exposed surface roots. The FSI B31-980 made light work of chasing out the roots, leaving the area ready to settle before being seeded in the autumn.

Pre-development clearance in Darras Hall, Newcastle.

The trees had already been taken down by someone else, but they’d been left at around 5–6 ft high with stump diameters of roughly 1.5–2.0 metres. That meant getting the big saws out first to reduce them down before bringing in the more than capable FSI B31-980.

Everything went swimmingly, Had some great banter with the owner, as well as a previous client who kindly recommended me for the job. Recommendations like that never go unnoticed and are always appreciated.

Even in this heat, I genuinely enjoyed this one. On to the next!

Another small job with big results, once again for an old friend from my running days.
The job was a cherry stump sitting right in the middle of a bed full of shrubs and plants. The plan was to remove the planting and extend the lawn so it all tied in with the existing grass.
When I asked, “Do you want me to grind the whole area out so it’s ready?” the reply was, “Can you do that?” Of course I can.
Once everything was ground out, I advised leaving the area to settle before reseeding in the autumn for the best results.
We always try to give honest, solid advice, even if it means more work for us . My nature is to help

We’ve been flat out over the last few weeks, so here’s a look at a few of the jobs we’ve been tackling.

This one was in Lanchester for an old running friend. There were multiple stumps to remove, but one in particular stood out – a large sycamore with plenty of regenerative growth.

After cutting the regrowth back, I got straight into the grinding. A few passes in… clunk. Brick. Moved across… another brick. Then another.

It turned out that when the tree was young, bricks had been placed around the base. Over the years, the sycamore simply grew around them, swallowing them into the timber and hiding them from sight until the grinder found them.

Let’s just say I used a few words I haven’t said for a long time… but we got there in the end. 💪🌳

Every job has its surprises, and that’s what keeps this game interesting.

Saturday Sesh! 🍻
That phrase definitely has a different meaning these days.
Today’s job was a straightforward stump clearance. The client had already felled the trees and even had a go at digging one of the stumps out himself… until he realised that’s exactly what we’re here for.
It might look like a simple job, but there’s always more to it than meets the eye. Before any grinding starts, we always carry out a CAT scan. It’s not just electrical cables we’re looking for—there could be internet, phone or TV service cables buried just below the surface too.
Today’s scan picked up a cable only inches down. One careless pass could have meant no internet, no Netflix, no Prime… and one very unhappy customer!
Another stump gone safely, another garden ready for the next stage of its transformation. 🌳👌

There’s tight… and then there’s mouse’s ear tight! 😅

First obstacle? An immovable car parked right in front of the garden gate.

Then it was through two narrow doorways before reaching an even tighter rear entrance. In the end, I had to carefully remove the downpipe and sink waste just to get the machine through.

Not every job is straightforward, but with a bit of problem-solving and the right equipment, there’s usually a way.

Another stump completely removed, and the garden is now ready for the landscaping to begin. 🌳💪

A job in Newcastle today at a development that will provide accommodation for international students. The site also includes a dedicated prayer space, and the gardens are being transformed as part of the project—so that’s where we came in.

Our task was to fully remove an old, lumpy sycamore stump that was right up against a wall. It needed to come out completely as the area will be regraded and turfed, meaning the finished ground levels are set to change.

It was a straightforward job overall, apart from uncovering an old concrete fence footing. Once we’d spotted it and worked around it, it came out without too much trouble, allowing us to carry on and get the stump fully removed.

I’ve said it before, but one of the best parts of this job is the people I meet. Every day brings a conversation with someone different. Today’s chat was a real eye-opener—interesting, informative, and a reminder that you can always learn something new.

“I seen the light…” 💡

While Liam and the lads removed the conifer and beech hedges, I followed behind grinding out the stumps. Another efficient, well-executed tree removal by Timmins Tree Surgery.

This garden had a full ring of electrical cables running around the perimeter. We always CAT scan before we grind as standard, but this one was a bit more obvious! We carefully moved the cables out of the way and got on with what we do best.

Another stump ground out safely with no damage, and the garden is now ready for the next stage of its transformation.

Thunder and lightning… now that’s a proper storm. Watching the lightning fork across the sky while the thunder rolls overhead made for an unforgettable day on the job.

The access wasn’t exactly straightforward either. We had to track the machine through the woods, climb a steep slope, and squeeze through a generous garden gate before we could even get started.

But that didn’t stop us. Twelve stumps, ranging from 12–20 inches, removed completely, leaving the garden ready for the next stage of its transformation.

Just another day proving that difficult access is all part of the job for Only Stumps. 💪🌳
