The character of a place is built over generations. ๐Ÿงฑ

Traditional brickwork and stone define the skylines of towns across Cheshire and North Wales.

When modern materials replace traditional methods, that character slowly disappears.

Heritage preservation isnโ€™t just about one building, itโ€™s about protecting the identity of the entire area.

Every stone tells a story. ๐Ÿงก

Across North Wales and the North West, each region has its own distinct materials, textures, and building traditions โ€” shaped by the land itself. From rugged mountain stone to warmer Cheshire brick, no two properties should ever be treated the same.

Understanding these differences is what allows us to restore โ€” not replace โ€” the character of a building. Because this work isn't just construction.

It's custodianship. ๐Ÿค

Dry stone walling is one of the oldest building traditions in the area, and it's still one of the more technically demanding things we do.

Every stone needs to sit right.๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ˜ฌ The wrong size or angle in the wrong spot and the section loses integrity.
๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Get it right, and you've got a wall that'll stand for well over a century with minimal upkeep.

We build and restore dry stone walls across North Wales and Cheshire โ€” boundary walls, estate walls, feature walls, heritage repairs. Each one built to the same standard: level, well-bonded, properly hearted.

๐Ÿ‘€ Interested in a dry stone wall for your property? Get in touch.

"Can you just patch it?" โ€” sometimes, yes. If it's a small section and the rest of the wall is sound, a patch might be able do the job.

But if the wall's been built wrong, repaired with cement, or had water sitting behind it for years, patching just kicks the problem down the road. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

We see it a lot.

Someone spends money on a patch, and two winters later they're back to square one with a bigger repair on their hands.

When we rebuild a wall, we do it properly:
โœ… Right stone, right placement โ€” no making do with what's easiest
โœ… Lime mortar that can move with the building without cracking
โœ… Drainage sorted, not left to chance
โœ… Bonding methods that suit how the wall was originally built

The upfront cost of doing it properly is always less than the long-term cost of doing it twice.

๐Ÿ“ Structural masonry work across North Wales, Chester, and Cheshire.

Lime mortar isn't one-size-fits-all. The mix we use in Snowdonia isn't the same one we'd use on a Cheshire sandstone terrace, as it shouldn't be. ๐Ÿ‘€

North Wales stone varies a lot. You've got dense grey slate in the uplands, softer rubble in the rural valleys, warmer tones as you move toward the border. Each one needs a mortar that's mixed to match โ€” not just in strength, but in colour and texture too.

We source and mix our own. When we're on a job, we're looking at the original stone, working out what was used, and getting as close to it as we can. A repoint that doesn't match the surrounding stone stands out straight away โ€” and on a conservation area property, it can cause planning issues too.

It's one of those parts of the job that takes time to get right. You build that eye over years of working with these materials on the tools. ๐Ÿ’ช

Cement on old stone is one of the most common mistakes we come across, and it's usually well-intentioned. ๐Ÿ˜…

Most general builders know how to use cement, it sets quickly, and it looks fine at first. However, the problem actually shows up a few years later when the moisture that should be escaping through the wall has nowhere to go. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

For anything built before 1920, lime mortar is the right call. Not just traditional, but structurally correct. More on the blog if you want the full picture!

Psst... Had cement used on your stone property? Drop us a message and breathe, it's usually fixable!

Lime mortar is better for the planet, better for your building, and better for your budget. Find out why more property owners are making the switch from cement.

Is your period home slowly suffocating? The culprit might be hiding in the mortar joints. ๐Ÿ‘€

Old stone buildings were never meant to be sealed. For centuries, lime mortar allowed walls to breathe (letting moisture in and out again) without causing damage. It's a natural cycle that kept buildings healthy for hundreds of years!

Alas, modern cement breaks that cycle. It's rigid, non-breathable, and traps moisture inside the wall where it has nowhere to go.

The result? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
Damp patches, crumbling stone and structural problems that compound every single winter.

At K Blythin, we use traditional lime mixes matched to your property โ€” restoring breathability, protecting your investment, and giving your home the care it was built for. So if you're noticing unexplained damp in an older property, give us a call!

We're always happy to advise on your period property restoration.
