Today I attended Oakwood High School in Moorgate Rotherham for a Career's Speed Networking Event.

This session was delivered to students in year 9 (aged between 13 - 14). The goal of careers speed networking is to give students the confidence, experience, and opportunity to meet local employers, ask them questions and find out about a range of different careers within the time available.

So I was quizzed by small groups of students (around 218 in total) about my industry, career experiences and pathways available. I really enjoyed the morning and the students were a credit to the school.

❓Carrying on this week with the theme of Solar Panels, I got asked a question last week "What is the difference between black and blue solar panels"?

⬛You may have seen over the years the traditional blue solar panels on rooftops, however more recently you will see modern, slimmer and more aesthetically pleasing black solar panels.

☀️The difference between black and blue solar panels is the way that they are made. Solar panels are made from silicon crystals as this is one of the best materials available for converting sunlight into energy.
Black solar panels are more complicated to produce as they are made up of lots of single crystal solar cells put together, whereas a blue panels are made up of lots of multi crystal solar cells.

⬛Because light interacts differently with single crystal (or monocrystalline) cells than it does with multi crystal (or polycrystalline) cells, this means black panels have a higher efficiency rating, meaning they can generate more electricity per unit of surface area.

❓Choosing between blue and black solar panels depends on your priorities and requirements. If you have a limited budget or have ample installation space, blue panels may be a suitable choice. On the other hand, if you have a higher budget, limited installation space, and live in an area with less sunlight, black panels may provide better efficiency and aesthetics.

Expanding your solar can mean: you already have solar panels and want more, you may have a battery and want more storage, or you might even want to add a battery to your existing solar panels!

🔋Battery Only Installation.
A battery only installation is the perfect way to complete your solar system. Whether you are adding storage to your existing solar panels, or increasing the storage you already have.

🪫How Does A Solar Battery Work?
A solar battery works almost exactly like any rechargeable battery. Solar panels convert the energy from the sun into DC electricity, this is then passed through an inverter that converts the energy either into usable energy for your home, or storable energy for you to keep for later. Once the inverter has converted the solar power into the storable energy it goes to your battery where it stays until your home needs to use it.

✔️Solar batteries have a storage capacity or sizes, this means the amount of energy that can be stored. With the help of your installer you can choose the number of batteries you may require. Another element to consider when it comes to a solar battery is the number of lifecycles it is under warranty for. A “cycle” refers to the number of times that the battery can be fully recharged from empty. Many batteries are warrantied for a certain length of time, or a certain number of cycles, so always check with your installer.
