Consumer unit upgrade in Unstone, Dronfield ⚡

A before-and-after look at a recent job completed by the Positive Electrics team.

We replaced the existing consumer unit with a modern FuseBox unit, followed by electrical testing and certification.

The upgrade included modern circuit protection and surge protection, helping provide a more up-to-date electrical installation.

A new home EV charging point installed ⚡🚗

There's a little more to installing an EV charger than fixing it to the wall!

For this recent job, our team supplied and installed a 7 kW BG Sync charger with a 7.5 m tethered cable, mounted on the customer's driveway wall.

The electrical supply was taken from the existing solar distribution board, with appropriate circuit protection and cabling routed around the wall and into the property.

While on site, the team also had a potentially live PIR cable to check and make safe, along with an additional IP-rated socket to install.

Another example of the different electrical jobs we carry out for homeowners.

Better car park lighting isn’t just about fitting brighter lights. Positioning matters too.

For this commercial job, the existing exterior fittings were removed and replaced with two new 100W LED floodlights.

The new lights were repositioned at a higher mounting height to improve the spread and coverage across the rear car park, with the wiring altered and extended as required and the external connections made weatherproof.

Once complete, the installation was tested to make sure everything was safe and operating correctly.

A practical upgrade, but one that can make a real difference to how usable and visible an outdoor area is after dark.

New equipment for your business? Don't forget about the electrics behind it. ⚡

We were recently brought in to connect a new oven to the existing electrical supply at a commercial premises.

Before making the connection, we needed to confirm the existing circuit was suitable, safely isolate the supply and then terminate and secure the new connections.

Once connected, we carried out the appropriate electrical and functional checks to make sure everything was ready for safe operation.

It's a good reminder that when you're investing in new equipment, the electrical requirements need to be considered too.

Sometimes the existing supply will already be suitable. Other times, alterations may be needed before the equipment can be safely connected.

Sometimes the right solution starts with checking what can already be used.

We were recently called out to Inkersall Post Office in Chesterfield to check whether the customer’s own LED tubes were compatible with the existing fittings.

They were, so we were able to replace them without creating unnecessary extra work or cost.

It’s a small job, but a good example of why it’s worth assessing what’s already there before recommending a bigger solution than the customer actually needs.

Sometimes the biggest part of the job isn't fitting something new.

It's finding the real cause of the problem.

Recently, we were asked to investigate a non-functioning EV charger. Rather than jumping straight to replacing equipment, we carried out a methodical fault-finding process, identified the issue, sourced the correct replacement parts and got everything working again.

Five early warning signs electricians look for during a routine inspection.

When we carry out an electrical inspection, we're not expecting to uncover major problems.

In fact, most inspections are about spotting the little things before they have the chance to become bigger ones.

Some of the early warning signs we look for include:

🚩 Loose or deteriorating electrical connections.

🚩 Early signs of overheating or discolouration.

🚩 Damaged or worn sockets, switches or accessories.

🚩 Flickering or deteriorating lighting.

🚩 Circuits that trip occasionally or other intermittent electrical faults.

Finding one of these doesn't automatically mean there's a serious problem.

It simply gives us the opportunity to investigate, understand what's causing it and deal with it before it develops further.

That's why routine electrical inspections are such an important part of keeping homes and businesses running safely and reliably.
