Solar and heat pumps can work very well together, but putting both technologies into the same home doesn’t automatically mean you’ll get the best from them.

Timing is one of the main things we look at.

Solar produces most during daylight hours. Heating demand often looks quite different, particularly through the colder months.

This is where sizing, storage and your tariff all come into play, alongside when you’re using electricity.

October tends to bring the same question every year.

Is there any point having solar when we’re heading into winter?

Solar panels generate electricity from daylight, not heat, so they continue producing through autumn and winter. What changes is the amount of available daylight and therefore the level of generation you can expect.

That seasonal variation should already have been accounted for when a system was designed and its likely annual generation was modelled.

It’s why we’d rather talk about expected performance across a full year than point to one particularly sunny month.

The panels are only one part of a commercial solar installation.

Before installation starts, there's a site assessment, energy-use analysis and system design to get through, along with the electrical and grid work needed to connect it properly.

That groundwork is what determines how well the system performs, more than the number of panels on the roof.

Installing solar on a working healthcare site comes with a different level of complexity.

At Kingsway Hospital in Derby, Solar Voltaics delivered a 175.13kWp commercial solar PV system across multiple roof areas, working around the existing electrical infrastructure and the demands of a live hospital environment.

The project included 422 solar panels, full system modelling, structural design and integration with the hospital's LV network, alongside grid compliance work.

The system is forecast to generate around 144,000kWh of electricity each year, lowering grid consumption and supporting the hospital's wider sustainability goals.

The hospital stayed fully operational throughout.

Solar and battery storage don't have to be bought as a package.
