URGENT: Don’t forget before you change your clocks this evening or tomorrow morning, check your RCDs in your consumer unit are working by pressing the test button, then reset the breaker.... do it a few times, RCDs need regular activation to stop them sticking or seizing up. To reset it push the lever down and then up.

An RCD is the safety device within your consumer unit that saves lives in the event of an electric shock. They activate when a fault occurs at about 25mA... not enough current to harm you, they also trigger within 30mS, so quick again to prevent you serious harm. They save lives and prevent fires so test them, no point having them if they don’t work! If they don’t work or, if you don’t have any then call me.

It’s also a timely reminder to test your smoke alarms at the same time.
Both these devices save lives but ONLY if they work!

Had a call out over the weekend to a home with no power. The Consumer Unit was old and the RCD had tripped and was broken. A new 18th edition RCBO Consumer Unit was purchased, installed, the house electrics fully tested and certified all in a day to the delight of the home owners.
If your consumer unit is old or has no RCD protection don’t wait for it to fail, cause a fire or electric shock…. Call me to discuss if it needs replacement.

Think your family are safe... maybe re-think that one.
The following details two local houses both posing serious threat of fire and loss of life.
The first home had burning in their Consumer Unit resulting in a loss of power, the Consumer Unit has to be replaced and fire damaged wires replaced... and all because of a loose connection. Rental properties must have a 5 year inspection, I strongly recommend your home has one too... costs depend on age and size of property but £200 to £300 will test & check most houses, an industry recognised EICR (Electrical Installation & Condition Report) will be issued.
The second property built in the 1950s, home to a young family, had corroded cables, discovered when 2 builders both got electrocuted. The house required a full rewire, costly but what price do you put on the safety of your children.
Get your Electrics checked and tested every 5 years, ensure that you have working RCDs to protect you from electric shock and ensure you have interlinked smoke alarms on each floor, keep your family safe!
