We tested navigating with google maps this morning and it WAS savvy to the road closure and automatically rerouted us, but just in case, our excellent colleagues at the Brownie Company have made a helpful map, so you can still get to the cafe, and after you've lunched, pottery class! The road's going to be closed for quite a while, so make sure to save this post.

I've had quite a few people asking for advice on buying a kiln that isn't manufactured in the USA, which is perfectly understandable if your former ally is threatening to turn you into a US state, imposing punitive tariffs, breaking agreements and treaties, and generally being unpleasant to the rest of the world apart from Russia and Israel.

Of the US kiln manufacturers, Skutt, L&L, Paragon and Olympic have significant overseas sales. But in most parts of the world there are alternatives. Many countries have local kiln manufacturers, such as ConeArt in Canada, and the two big German manufacturers, Rohde and Nabertherm, between them cover most of the countries that the US manufacturers cover - though not at present in North America, and coverage in South America is not as good.

But you can also be a bit more precise in your targeting, just avoiding kilns from states that voted Republican, as the EU and China have done with their tariffs imposed in response to those from the USA. This makes Skutt and L&L OK to purchase, but not Paragon or Olympic.

And although not a kiln, Orton's cones come from Republican Ohio. They're the last remaining cone manufacturer, and although you could switch to rings, Ferro's PTCR come from a US company, and Buller's from Mantec in the UK are not as good. So why not upgrade to an R or S thermocouple, and a controller from Stafford Instruments (UK), Bentrup (Germany) or similar that logs your firing?
