Some shots from our recent escapades in the gardens.

May is such a glorious month.

The buxus clipping season is keeping us busy. A painstaking process which, when done well, produces beautiful, lasting results. We do however have serious misgivings about promoting this as a sustainable evergreen topiary plant. It suffers chronically from two types of blight and now, more pertinently, the devastating caterpillar, an invasive species from Asia which is destroying buxus across the length and breadth of the country.

We are keenly exploring alternatives such as taxus (yew), pittosporum, euonymus and ilex crenata.

Message us for more ideas or for help dealing with caterpillar infestations.

We were lucky enough to visit the Eden Project this weekend, thereby ticking off a long-standing “bucket-list” item. What an experience it is too. Here are a few highlights of the amazing flora and fauna we saw:

This week.......

We have been mainly scarifying and then feeding lawns to remove moss, weeds and dead, thatched grass, thus opening up the ground to allow water and air to the roots and help the grass thrive and out-compete the moss.

With a little searching around we've found the inevitable hatchling buxus caterpillars in every single one of our clients' gardens. They're still small (c. 2cm long) and haven't yet started their devastation, so we've started spraying with Xentari - an excellent German-made biological and ecologically safe insecticide. Keep an eye out for the signs: webbing, chewed leaves and the moths and caterpillars themselves.

Tool of the month - or should I say “best tool all year round”

WOLF GARTEN MULTI CHANGE LEAF RAKE 42CM

In our opinion, the best all-round rake due to its versatility, lightness and sturdiness.

You can use it to:

tidy up flower beds, the yard and the lawn

gather leaves, grass clippings and debris from paved areas

cover grass seed with top-soil when repairing and re-seeding lawns.

What makes it a 5 star is the fact that you can use it on soft as well as hard ground due to its 21 robust, basket-like tines.

Plus the Wolf Garten rake is made of high quality plastic as well as being light and flexible, easy to clean and, importantly, it's bright red, so ultra visible on a green background.

And like all German-engineered Wolf Garten tools you not only get exceptional build quality but also a ridiculously long guarantee which covers any defects (sometimes up to 35 years!)

So many uses packed in one tool!

Spanish dagger or “Yucca gloriosa” serves as a versatile plant, traditionally employed by Native American tribes for assorted tasks. The plant’s fibres, extracted from leaves, were twisted into sturdy threads, ideal for making needles and crafting baskets renowned for their resilience.

Spanish dagger holds a unique place in Native American folklore, often associated with myths of origin and spiritual practices.

Tips:
Remove spent flower spikes in spring, cutting them back close to their point of origin in the centre of the rosette. I would strongly recommend to wear protective glasses if you do not want to blind yourself with the spiky leaves!
Cut dead leaves back almost to the stem to leave a neat stub. Do not overclean the stem by removing all vestiges of the leaf.

Spring, the sweet spring
BY THOMAS NASHE

Spring, the sweet spring, is the year’s pleasant king,
Then blooms each thing, then maids dance in a ring,
Cold doth not sting, the pretty birds do sing:
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

The palm and may make country houses gay,
Lambs frisk and play, the shepherds pipe all day,
And we hear aye birds tune this merry lay:
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!

The fields breathe sweet, the daisies kiss our feet,
Young lovers meet, old wives a-sunning sit,
In every street these tunes our ears do greet:
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to witta-woo!
Spring, the sweet spring!

Happy Easter everyone!

A memory from January:

Off to break through 3 inches of ice and eradicate reed mace from a small wooden boat in a series of moats. Not your everyday gardening task.
