So! When I opened the cable up this is what I found. The screw when it has initially been screwed into the wall has penetrated the live (red) conductor and the protective earth conductor (the uninsulated one) and caused a high current earth fault which would have caused the MCB to trip as well as the RCD. At the same time the fault has caused the protective earth to sever and partially burn away till it was no longer in contact with the screw. Leaving the screw in contact with the live conductor and no path to earth in order to clear the fault.

Today's Challenge! Customer keeps getting an electrical shock when she showers. Had another electrician in and he told her it was static. I was asked to investigate as customer, quite rightly, didn't believe it was. A simple test confirmed the shower cubicle was connected to the socket circuit. Unfortunately that meant taking the shower cubicle and some of the wall cladding out to find this.

The hole is where a screw had been that was holding the bathroom cladding in place. It had penetrated the white plastic capping and the cable underneath it. The metal frame of the shower cubicle was sitting on top of this screw, making the entire shower cubicle live. Definitely not static lol

Some pictures of the finished job.

In all about 80 feet of trenches were dug to install 3 post lights. 3 wall lights were also fitted as well as 3 outdoor sockets and associated control gear such as switches and light sensors.

Thanks to Ian Gordon of Pastures New Services for much needed help with the trenches.

Joint Venture with Pastures New Services.

Digging trenches to lay cables for garden lighting by hand. Good honest work for me and Ian Gordon of PNS.

We've both earned a beer today!

This is why you shouldn't drill a hole in a wall directly above, below or horizontally to an electrical accessory.

And this is why you should get a professional in!

The small cable coming out of the bottom of the 2 black terminal blocks are 6mm csa only capable of handling 50Amps or so. They're directly connected to the 80Amp main fuse 😲

The other end is connected to a new consumer unit at the other side of the house, about 15m away. The cable should be 25mm csa and because of the distance have it's own separate over current protection as Northern Powergrid wont guarantee their fuse will blow on faults past 3m in length.

If you see the sort of arrangement in the top photo, contact me, it's dangerous.

Before & after! Was just a tad too dangerous to be left!
